Church Mice and Acolytes

Acolyte masters Meg and Donald Horton, along with Vergers Carolyn Dolen, John Robertson, and Bill Ford are so proud of the young ladies and gentlemen that serve faithfully week after week. These cute handmade church mice, made by the Verger's Guild of the Episcopal Church, were presented to each of our acolytes in gratitude for the work they do to elevate our worship all year long. We hope these will bring memories of Saint Paul's Church for years to come.

FROM THE RECTOR

Dear People of Saint Paul's,

As wonderful as Christmas has been, I admit that I have greeted each day this week as a welcome step back toward our normal routines. Our normal routines at Saint Paul's are full of active faithfulness and there is a lot this month that I want to highlight. Outside of Saint Paul's but deeply resonant with our mission, we'll go this month to the Jimmie Dyess Symposium on January 11, the Progressive Religious Coalition's Martin Luther King, Jr. event featuring Episcopalian Jon Meacham on January 17, and a Holocaust Remembrance service at Adas Yeshurun Synagogue on January 27. Inside Saint Paul's, we are moving toward our Annual Meeting on January 28, when we'll celebrate the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, elect new vestry members, and hear vital reports on our work together in the last year. Once again this year, the vestry will host some sessions at the 9:30 formation hour to prepare us for the annual meeting. On January 14, we'll discuss the direction we think we're headed as a parish and how we'll get there (spoiler alert: it involves you). And then on January 21, we'll present and discuss the budget.

In the meantime, after a choppy Christmas schedule, our regular programming is back. I want especially to point you towards our Tuesday night Zoom book study, which is reading Henri Nouwen's short, beautiful book The Wounded Healer. It's not too late to join. This Sunday at adult formation, we'll have a one-off session on the mystery and meaning of the Incarnation (the what and the so-what). The Celtic service will have its winter reception after the 5:30 service Sunday night. And above all, this Sunday morning, we'll celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany and baptize three people into the Body of Christ. To celebrate the feast and the Baptisms, a cooked breakfast will be available in Tyler Hall from 9:00 to 10:30.

Please keep those three new Christians in your prayers this week, and join us in living out our Baptismal Covenant in all the ways listed above.

Lux Mundi: the Incarnation and the Light of the World

OTHER RESOURCES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

A Few Notes on the "Management" of our Prayer List

Our official prayer list is an important part of our community of prayer, organizing our prayers for our beloveds. In order for our prayer list to be effective, we must all stay connected to the list, so we ask that you contact the parish office to update us on the status of your prayer request with a quick email monthly.

Twice a year the parish will begin a new prayer list: July 1 and January 31. Of course, it is fine for a name to remain on our list for an extended period of time; we ask that you simply email the parish office to let us know you’d like a name (new or continuing) to be added to our new list.

Summer Mission Experience

Mission dates - 7 days scheduled June 6 - June 13, 2024

You are invited to join Saint Paul’s parishioners, family, and friends on a mission experience this summer to Ecuador, June 6-13, 2023. Please prayerfully consider joining us as we reach out to people in need and serve as the hands of Christ.

VESTRY NOMINATIONS

The Vestry Nominating Committee is seeking candidates whom you believe would make outstanding Vestry members for Saint Paul's. If you'd like to suggest someone, including yourself, please contact retiring Senior Warden Cameron Nixon. Prior to nominating someone else, please discuss with them their interest and willingness to serve in this role.

VESTRY RESPONSIBILITIES

The basic responsibilities of the Vestry are:

  • to ensure effective organization and planning
  • to manage resources and finances
  • to attend monthly vestry meetings and annual vestry retreat
  • to serve as liaison to assigned parish committees

We expect to elect for three full three-year terms. If the new senior warden comes from the current vestry, we may have an additional unexpired term to fill.

  • Have you been confirmed or received in the Episcopal Church?

Each nominee slated to run for election to the Vestry will be invited to share a profile with the parish via our regular parish communications including the weekly newsletter.
