Why did you choose to volunteer with Charting Careers?
“Initially, it was my wife's encouragement after we attended a Charting Careers fundraising event, but after my first encounter with the scholars, I was impressed with the program's goals and objectives.”
What motivates you to give back to the community and work with youth?
“What's the saying?...'it takes a village'. A village in Winchester, Virginia, made me the man I am today. I was fortunate to have two loving parents and an array of aunts, uncles, and other relatives, but I also had teachers, sports coaches, Sunday School teachers, scout leaders, and everyday citizens interested in my success as a person. I owe it to today's youth to pay that interest forward."
What's your favorite thing about volunteering at Charting Careers?
“The fun and laughter. The scholars are quite entertaining at times...lol. They also teach me about so many things happening right around me. They really make me feel younger than my years. I am also a strong proponent of education being the foundation of success, and Charting Careers is focused on these young people getting their education. True story-- after having lived virtually my entire life close to DC, I visited the Capitol building and toured with a group from Charting Careers. It was a fantastic experience!”
What would you say to someone who's thinking of volunteering?
“Easy answer... Just Do It! A better answer is that I believe you will get far more out of the experience than you put into it.”
