New AME Center Publications: Chronic Stress

Facing repeated stressors increases one’s allostatic load, the cumulative burden of chronic stress on the body.


In recent work, Dr. Martin Picard's team linked cellular allostatic load with increased energy expenditure and accelerated cellular aging.

Using optic sensor technology, led by Dr. Wendy Mendes and postdoctoral scholar Grace Mak, PhD investigated how acute and chronic stress exposure may affect blood pressure and heart rate, seeking to better understand the physiological effects of stressors of various timescales.

UCSF AME researchers, led by postdoctoral scholar Ryan Brown, PhD examined the associated between two biomarkers of healthy longevity, telomere length and klotho, in high-stress and low-stress caregivers.


They found low klotho was associated with shorter telomeres in people under chronic stress but in low-stress populations, they are independent and unrelated.

Mindfulness Teacher - Opportunity to help with climate distress!


The AME Center seeks qualified mindfulness teachers to lead a small group on mindfulness & climate resilience for UC students.


Candidates will ideally hold a background in ecology/climate studies, and volunteer to teach/facilitate 8 sessions from April to June 2024 for one or more small groups.
