Community Newsletter December 19, 2023 Volume 10 Issue 4

Greetings, Community Members and Partners –

As we prepare for the Holiday season, I wanted to take the time to express my appreciation to all of our internal and external community partners. There are many individuals and organizations that support our students throughout the year, and I would like the last community newsletter of the year to highlight some of the incredible acts of kindness that have helped our students through the holidays.

Through a partnership with Pastor David Smith, Representative Armando Walle, and HEB, several of our Lone Star College-Houston North students received Turkey vouchers. The student recipients, and their families, expressed their sincere gratitude.

One of our most loyal and active community partners, Cheryl Turner, provided several gift cards to students so they could purchase meals for their families. Perhaps one of the most heartwarming pictures I saw was her meeting one of the students that she helped.

I also want to publicly thank our faculty, administrators, and Communities in Schools staff, who on their own, decided to provide dinner boxes to students.

I am truly grateful to all who ensured our students had great Thanksgiving meals.

In addition, many of our student parents received support in the form of toys for their children. I learned a few years ago that Christmas often presents a difficult choice for our students. Many must choose between paying for their tuition and/or textbooks or providing gifts for their children. Due to the generosity of the City of Houston, Houston Police Department, and Anosh Inc. Foundation, a lot of our students did not have to make that choice. We were provided with toys for our student parents that were distributed at this year’s Cookies and Cocoa event.

Thanks to The River Flows Foundation, many of our students received clothes for themselves and their children.

Lastly, I want to thank all that have donated to our C.A.R.E. Centers (Food Pantries) over the past two months. Usage of this service always increases around the holiday season and this year is no different. I would like to give a special thanks to the organizations that have assisted us with stocking our C.A.R.E. Centers.

The Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. Zeta Phi Chapter provided a range of items including food, snacks, household items, and personal hygiene products. They have pledged to continue to provide assistance throughout the year.

We also had several Lone Star College System employee groups provide in-kind donations to our Care Centers. These groups include the Office of Human Resources, Technology Services, the LSC Foundation, and the Professional Support Staff Association.

We strive to be a college not just in the community but of the community. While we work to be the best that we can be for the communities we serve, I am very appreciative of how the community has embraced our students and helped them through their college years.

I want to end by quoting one of our student parents who received toys at our Cookies and Cocoa event. She noted, “I do this (meaning going to college) for her (pointing to her daughter), but the extra help and incentives makes it much easier for me.”

Thanks to each of you for all that you do.

Happy Holidays!!!

Sincerely,

Quentin Wright, Ed.D.

What is the C.A.R.E.Center?

At Lone Star College-Houston North, we believe that with the right structure, and the right support, our students can be successful inside and outside of the classroom.

Students learn about job opportunities at LSC-Houston North Fallbrook Job and Networking Fair

Our Fallbrook Job and Networking Fair was a great turnout with several employers in attendance, including Aquacare Assistance Program, Building Talent Foundation, Harris County Department of Education, Fed Ex, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, IEducate, Fred Loya Insurance, and Child Care Careers.

Career Services really does connect students to Better Jobs. LSC-Houston North Student Gamaliel, attended a previous Job and Networking fair at our Victory location and was able to secure his very first job with Chick-fil-A. Way to go Gamaliel!

Our Panther Pact Emergency Fund is a safety net for our students, with 100% of the proceeds helping them directly.

We are the most diverse Lone Star College institution and our locations exist in the lowest-income sections of our system’s service area. However, for the past three years, our students have continually had some of the highest completion rates within the system.

We invested a lot of time into developing partnerships so we can help students in a cost-efficient manner. We've helped students remove barriers such as food insecurity, clothing and toiletry needs, textbook costs, as well as a technology divide.

Your contribution will directly support a student in continuing their legacy.
