Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and healthy holiday season. Thank you for the opportunity to serve our Chapter as President in 2022. I started in the appraisal profession 20 years ago, and during that time I have seen our Chapter grow and flourish. Our educational programs attract an increasing number of local and out of state appraisers as well as other professionals that work closely with the appraisal industry. We have been fortunate to have great leadership within our chapter, and I am honored that you have chosen me to lead you in 2022!

I am looking forward to a great year, although it appears we will have to continue to work through the challenges that COVID presents. Our meetings and educational programs will continue to be virtual through at least the first quarter of 2022. The virtual classes have been a success, and I want to thank you for continuing to help support our chapter with your attendance in these offerings.

For those of you unable to attend the holiday party last month in Birmingham, the new officers and board of directors were installed, and new designations were presented.

Congratulations to

  • Alan Tidwell, MAI
  • Jonathan Miles, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS & AI-RRS
  • Ryan Nunley, MAI
  • Ashleigh Conner, MAI; and
  • John Praytor, MAI

for receiving designations in 2021.

Also Volunteer of the Year Awards were presented to

  • Mark Haller, MAI, SRA
  • Mike Brooks, MAI, SRA, and
  • Roger Ball, MAI, AI-GRS

in recognition of and appreciation for their outstanding contribution to the merger of the Alabama & Mississippi Chapters of the Appraisal Institute in 2021.

This merger has given us the opportunity to bolster our membership roster (Mississippi had 89 Members at the time of the merger) and offer additional classes in Mississippi. It also expands our pool of future leaders that will serve the Chapter in the years to come.

On January 24th, Jeff Miller, MAI, AI-GRS will be teaching the

2022-2023 7 Hour National USPAP Update synchronously via ZOOM.

On June 10th-11th, we plan to offer Inconsistency: It’s Hiding in Plain Sight in Your Appraisal in person in Biloxi, MS. The class will be taught by Leslie Sellers, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS. We hope to add other in-person and synchronous classes throughout the year. Currently, however, these are still in the planning stages.

We will continue to offer the “After Hours” events for networking with friends and colleagues.  An extra fun one is planned after the class on June 10th at the Harrah’s Casino & Hotel Pool Deck in Biloxi, MS. I will look forward to seeing many of you there!

I know these are challenging times, but I hope you will continue to support our chapter by attending educational offerings and meetings in 2022. For us to continue growing and thriving, we need your participation. I will look forward to seeing you soon whether it be on a ZOOM or in person. Please feel free to contact me with questions or suggestions of how the Alabama/Mississippi Chapter can better serve its members.

Respectfully Submitted,

Hayden Scott, MAI
