Advent: Out of the Ordinary
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.
The virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said,
"Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you."
But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.
He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David.
He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."
– Luke 1:26-32

Like many people, I sometimes get weary of the frenzied dimensions of our cultural Christmas celebrations: Christmas music soundtracks and shopping center décor in full splendor by early November, the crush of cars and people, unrealistic expectations of a perfect Currier and Ives scene in contrast with the realities of family systems dysfunction, war in the Middle East, racism on the rise and so much more.
But, there is something I love about the season that has nothing really to do with Jesus or theology or Advent or “the true meaning of Christmas.” I love the tree in my living room. If we step back, it is an odd tradition, is it not? If we were not so used to this idea, imagine responding to this instruction, “Put a dead tree up in the middle of your living space, string it with lights, and festoon it with decades-old marshmallow snowman ornaments made by a kindergartner. In a dry desert city.”
What I love about it is how the memories, the lights, the pine smell shift things “out of the ordinary” in my living room that looks out on a gravel yard, potted cactus, and sunshine most days. It is the same room as always, same house, same street, and same town, but I see it differently. I often stop longer in the room. I pause. I listen to music. I listen for the Spirit. And something shifts in me.
Mary was, by most definitions, “ordinary.” But God calls her “out of the ordinary” and into a risky venture: starting a “non-traditional family” that somehow could embody God’s transformative reign in the world She first wondered, “how can this be?” However, she eventually listened, and said, “yes” to the journey. And we are celebrating this “yes” two thousand years later.
I invite you to let this season offer reminders of the life-giving goodness that
comes when we move “out of the ordinary.” The ordinary expectations often
have us frantic and exhausted. We can, instead, in each day choose to move out of those places, and more into times of listening, contemplation, and reflecting on the light that is available in these longest dark days of the year. But, as with all things of the Spirit, this is never about “once and done,” it is not about an extraordinary moment never to be lived again. The Way of Jesus is moving “out of the ordinary” and into greater immersion in the Spirit, such that we and the “ordinary” are transformed more and more into the fullness of life and love that God intends for us and the world.
Come and see!
Love,
Pastor Michael Bush

Communion and Contemplation Sunday in the Chapel
8:30 am December 24th
Pastors Michael and John are offering a different kind of worship experience: a 30 minute service providing immersion in some reflective music, prayer, silence, and a spiritual practice contemplating the Sunday Scriptures and themes (that will also be part of the 9:30 am sanctuary worship), and then closing with communion by coming forward to receive elements. This worship opportunity may serve as a quiet preparation time for the 9:30 am worship in the sanctuary or may serve as your primary worship experience in community on a Sunday morning. Come, and see!

From Jenn
'Thank you' are words that are just not sufficient for what I would like to express to CAUCC. I started here almost 14 years ago (at only 9 hours a week!). This church was exactly what I needed at that moment and has repeatedly been what I’ve needed so many times over the years. I was welcomed in a way that I never had been before. The staff and congregation are kind, understanding, hilarious, flexible, and truly live up to what a church should be. Anne has taught me so many things that I lost count after my first month; we have laughed together and cried together, and she has left an indelible mark on my heart. I've made memories with many members and friends over the years. I've worked with 10 pastors and have seen this campus and church transform. My kids attended VBS when they were little – they are now adults!
Last week, I was taken to lunch at El Charro with Anne, Barry, Ida, Jay, John, and Michael, and what a treat it was! I very much appreciated the small gathering. They presented a HUGE card signed with so many kind wishes, as well as a check from a purse collection. What an amazing gift! You are all so amazing and generous and I am going to miss you all!
Leaving CAUCC has been the hardest decision I’ve ever made. This congregation is unforgettable and I will cherish the memories I have here. Thank you for being there for me. Thank you for being a place where I was always happy to be. Thank you for your smiles when you walk in the door. Thank you for the laughter and love. Thank you for being you. I love you all and will miss you deeply.
