Pre-packaged communion cups will be offered every Sunday.

COVID-Safe Virtual Church Events and Programs

Due to the continuing concerns of COVID-19 and the Delta variant, the following events and programs will remain virtual in the Fall. More details will follow for each event and program.

Confirmation classes will be held virtually via Zoom. Confirmation Sunday will be on June 5, 2022 for the senior class (2 year program).

First Communion classes will be held virtually via Zoom. Those who started 5th grade in September 2021 will go through the program in the Spring for Palm Sunday 2022.

COVID Safety for New Groups

Many groups and organizations are occupying space at Good Shepherd. The Chinese Community Center of NJ (CCCNJ) occupies the church premises on Saturdays and is in session until 12PM. We ask that if you need to visit the church on Saturdays, to please do so after 12PM. If you need to visit before that timeframe, you will be subject to temperature checks to strictly adhere to the CCCNJ COVID protocols.

The Glen Rock Community School, preschool and adult classes, occupy the church Monday through Friday, varying at different times, but generally between 9AM-3PM. We ask that if you visit the church during our office hours of 9AM-3PM, to be extra careful driving in the parking lots as small children will be present.

We ask that you wear a mask when entering the building for any reason. Please minimize interactions with all groups present at the time of visiting.

Virtual Sunday School

Sunday school will resume virtually in the new year. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

75 Blessings for 75 Years

2022 marks Good Shepherd’s 75th anniversary. Throughout the years, Good Shepherd has been on the receiving end of God’s endless blessings. To celebrate this milestone, we will be sharing our blessings with a different organization each month. At the beginning of each month, I will let you know what item is being collected and what organization will be receiving these items. Our goal is to collect (at least) 75 of each item.

In January, we will be collecting bags of white rice and bags of dried beans (pinto or black) to be donated to Saint Paul's Community Development Corporation Food Pantry. Some background on St. Paul’s CDC Food Pantry:

“The purpose of the SPCDC Food Pantry is to provide supplemental food assistance to individuals and families who are unable to financially meet their daily nutritional requirements. Our ultimate goal is to develop self-sufficiency in our clients. Our food assistance program is intended as a "hand-up," not a "handout" in helping individuals and families achieve greater stability in their lives.”

If you have any questions, please contact Christa Schurmann at 678-677-3905 or christapeace@aol.com

Women's Bible Study meets every other Monday at 7:30PM via Zoom. More women are beginning to show an interest in this Bible Study. Join us for one session and experience what the buzz is all about. Beginning in the New Year, our next sessions will be on January 17 and January 31. The women we will be studying are Leah, Tamar (Daughter-in-law of Judah) and Potiphar's wife, in that order.

Any questions? You can reach out to Lillian Ostrander, Carol Voss or Dorothy Gall. You will need to purchase the book to fully participate in the Bible study. Please note the single author of the book we are using. There is a different edition with 2 authors.

Good Shepherd Book Group

The chosen book for the next Good Shepherd Book Group virtual meeting is The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson.

"From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

With stunning historical detail, Wilkerson tells this story through the lives of three unique individuals: Ida Mae Gladney, who in 1937 left sharecropping and prejudice in Mississippi for Chicago, where she achieved quiet blue-collar success and, in old age, voted for Barack Obama when he ran for an Illinois Senate seat; sharp and quick-tempered George Starling, who in 1945 fled Florida for Harlem, where he endangered his job fighting for civil rights, saw his family fall, and finally found peace in God; and Robert Foster, who left Louisiana in 1953 to pursue a medical career, the personal physician to Ray Charles as part of a glitteringly successful medical career, which allowed him to purchase a grand home where he often threw exuberant parties.

Wilkerson brilliantly captures their first treacherous and exhausting cross-country trips by car and train and their new lives in colonies that grew into ghettos, as well as how they changed these cities with southern food, faith, and culture and improved them with discipline, drive, and hard work. Both a riveting microcosm and a major assessment, The Warmth of Other Suns is a bold, remarkable, and riveting work, a superb account of an “unrecognized immigration” within our own land. Through the breadth of its narrative, the beauty of the writing, the depth of its research, and the fullness of the people and lives portrayed herein, this book is destined to become a classic."

A book group discussion will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 7:30PM via Zoom. See the invitation below.

Bishop's Challenge Book Study

Screen Shot 2022-01-12 at 2.55.25 PM.png

Join Bishop Barholomew on Tuesday, February 22 or Thursday, February 24 from 7:30PM-9PM for a discussion of Isabel Wilkerson's book, the Warmth of Other Suns. This book uses the stories of three families to tell how and why millions of Black Americans left the South between 1915 and 1970 in what is known today as The Great Migration. We will look at how the Great Migration continues to influence life today for all of us.

Both evenings will be similar in content; please join us for one of them online. Numerous reading guides can be found online - one from the publisher can be found here. Look for sign-up information coming in January!

Please note that this is the same book that the Good Shepherd Book Group is currently reading. Our book discussion will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 7:30 via zoom. Please see Carol Voss’s announcement (above) for more information.
