Children Grieve: 

The Basics of Grieving Children and How to Support Them

 

A foundational understanding of children’s grief is crucial for optimal development. During this presentation children’s grief will be explored from the child and family perspective. Topics included will be grief symptoms, grief and development, how to support a grieving child and more.

Join us for an introductory look at childhood grief and why it matters.

TAKEAWAYS:

  • Participants will receive education dispelling myths about children’s grief, how to identify grief symptoms, and how to talk to children about death.

Carly Weiss, MSW (she/her), received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Columbia University in 2021 and is Registered as a Clinical Social Work Intern with the State of Florida. Carly is currently a Grief Counselor at Blue Butterfly and works primarily at the Tidewell Family Grief Center in Palmetto. Since 2016, Carly has developed extensive background and knowledge for working with children and families. She had held several roles in community mental health, non-profit organizations, education and social services, specializing in child welfare, behavioral mental health, substance use treatment and now grief counseling. Prior to Carly’s current role, Carly served as a Substance Use Clinician primarily working with adults involved in the Department of Corrections (DOC) and Department of Children and Families (DCF) systems. Carly has a progressive approach to therapy and is very passionate about grief education. Carly has focused her social work career, thus far, on advocacy, collaboration, counseling and relationship building to strengthen family units, encourage child wellbeing and improve community access to resources and therapeutic services.

Zjohnae Milton, MA is a Blue Butterfly Counselor serving the Newtown, FL area. She has a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling with a concentration on the family unit and is a Registered as a Mental Health Counseling Intern with the state of Florida. She utilizes her understanding of trauma informed care in a client centered approach. Zjohnae has worked primarily with the substance abuse population the last 7 years focusing on a combination of mental health stability, environmental factors, and family dynamics. Zjohnae loves to dance, spend time with her family, travel, and write in her spare time. She also is a published author. 

Lendy Chapman, MS, CCLS is a Certified Child Life Specialist who has worked with children and families for over 20 years.  Lendy provided child life services for over 15 years in a local children’s hospital and supported children and families in various units including the Emergency Room, NICU, PICU, and Hem/Onc.  Lendy is an active member of the Association of Child Life Professionals, has served on numerous committees and has presented at multiple national conferences for ACLP.  Lendy received her Masters degree from Boston University in 2015, which she identifies as an important achievement in her career.   In addition, Lendy has served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Central Florida to help prepare future students in their work with children.  Currently, Lendy works at Blue Butterfly Family Grief Center where she serves as a counselor for grieving children and provides coaching and support to families.
