March 18, 2022
The Seattle Education Association is the voice for educators standing with our students united to address the needs of our community and to transform our district into an anti-racist school system where every student thrives.
Know Your Rights: Displacement

Prior to the pandemic, SPS projected enrollment would drop based on area demographics over the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years. Enrollment drives state funding. Buildings have been put in the difficult decision of having to decide which programming and services they can afford to continue and which will be cut.

Displacements are due to enrollment changes and other program shifts. When a school’s projected enrollment drops (e.g. kindergarten goes from 3 to 2 classrooms, or students identified for resource goes from 46 to 32), there is generally little choice where displacements occur. School leaders will look at the projections and should notify all staff who may be displaced. This must happen to meet contract and district policy.

How Do We Improve Family Engagement?

SEA and Seattle Council PTSA are partnering with National PTA Center for Family Engagement to host a listening session for Seattle educators on March 24, 6:00 – 7:15pm. The National PTA is updating the National Family Engagement Standards and wants to hear directly from educators on how to improve family engagement.

PTA recognizes the research which demonstrates when families are engaged, students achieve more, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic/racial background, or the parents'/guardians’ education level. Family engagement is essential for the positive emotional and social development, cultural growth, and academic achievement of every child. SEA WEAPAC Phone Drive Update

Shout out to all the SEA members that newly joined WEAPAC or increased their contributions during our WEAPAC phone drive! Our collective contributions increase our voice in Olympia and directly contributed to the gains achieved in this year’s legislative session from the 5.5% COLA funding allocation for K-12 employees to increased funding for nurses, counselors, social workers, transportation, and student mental health supports.

The Washington Education Association Political Action Committee (WEAPAC) is our voice in elections. Almost everything about our school day is impacted by the decisions made by elected state officials from class size to curriculum, instructional hours, staffing, and pay and benefits.

Not yet a member? Join today at WEAPAC Join. Already a member and want to increase your contribution? It’s the same e-join form accessible at: WEAPAC Join.
