The Skokie School Home Scoop

Dear Skokie Community,

Our academic advisors are looking forward to their conferences with you this week. Conferences present us with an opportunity to celebrate the progress each child is making and identify areas for continued growth and improvement.

Inevitably, there will be some things your child has not yet mastered. Not yet being the operative words. Growth mindset is one of the core learning concepts that we strive to teach our students. Over the years, Winnetka Public Schools has focused on and learned from Carol Dweck's research related to growth mindset. If you are not familiar with this work, take a moment to watch this talk by Carol Dweck focused on the power of yet. A high level summary is that Dweck's research shows that intelligence is not fixed, but it is directly influenced by effort, hard work, and resilience.

What might "the power of yet" look like in practice? Imagine reviewing your child's next end of unit math assessment when it comes home. By using the language of "not yet" when talking about academic performance, you will support your child in being more confident, and as a byproduct, more persistent and resilient. For instance, instead of saying, "It looks like you don't know how to multiply fractions," you could say, "It looks like you don't know how to multiply fractions yet. I know you will get there if you keep working hard and practicing." Praising student effort rather than intelligence is another cornerstone of this research.

All of us at Skokie look forward to your children's continued growth in their academic and personal endeavors in the months to come. We are committed to providing each child support along the way.

Take care,

Extended Day Planning

At the January Board Meeting, the District presented a Spring, Summer, Fall 2021 Roadmap, detailing plans to further maximize safe, in-person, quality learning.  The implementation date for Carleton Washburne School will land within the window of March 8 - April 5 and be confirmed at the Special School Board Meeting on Monday, February 15. Implementation criteria and a date for grades K-6 will be discussed at the Special Board Meeting on February 15 and again at the Regular Board Meeting on February 23; if criteria are met, implementation will occur in April.

We are interested in parent input and considerations as we move forward with the extended day planning process. If you would like to submit ideas or considerations in our planning, please complete this form.

CrisisGo Compliance Reminder
As we plan to lengthen our school day, it is critically important that all families with students attending our schools continue to fill out the CrisisGo Symptom checker daily.  This practice has been pivotal in contact tracing, reporting to the county, and proactively responding to avoid community spread of COVID-19.

We ask for community compliance in order to support the safety of our families and staff.
