Watershed Stewards are Hard at Work
Each year, two AmeriCorps service members spend six months in the Newfound watershed serving as NLRA Watershed Stewards. From monitoring water quality to leading community programs, stewarding Grey Rocks Conservation Area, and more, they have a visible impact on our mission to conserve and protect Newfound Lake and its watershed.
This year's Watershed Stewards, Jenna Detar and Anthony Jaster, have just completed a whirlwind of training, from boat driving to wilderness first aid and invasive species management.
Now they are busy with on-the-ground conservation efforts:
- Staffing Grey Rocks Conservation Area Friday-Monday
- Supervising volunteer work days
- Promoting conservation at local events
- Performing water quality monitoring of Newfound Lake and it's tributaries
- Planning and leading guided programing
Anthony and Jenna will be working throughout the summer in a variety of roles, and they hope to see you at Grey Rocks, upcoming events, and around the watershed!
In partnership with NH LAKES, NLRA staffs Lake Hosts at Newfound's public boat launches throughout the summer. They educate boaters and perform complimentary checks for invasive aquatic species that can "hitchhike" from lake to lake on boats and trailers. Invasive aquatic species threaten water quality, recreator safety, and even property values. On their first weekend at the Wellington State Park boat ramp, Lakes Hosts inspected over 264 incoming boats, ensuring they were invasive-free.

Clean, Drain, and Dry
Our first defense against aquatic invasive species.
Aquatic invasive species often enter waterbodies on boats and trailers. Following Clean, Drain, Dry principles is the best way to protect Newfound Lake from the devastating effects of invasive species. Follow these easy steps from Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers:
-
Clean off visible aquatic plants, animals, and mud from all equipment before leaving water access.
-
Drain motor, bilge, livewell, and other water containing devices before leaving water access.
-
Dry everything for at least five days OR wipe with a towel before reuse.
