COVID-19 Updates from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS)
After reaching a peak in cases with over 65,000 cases reported the week of January 3, cases have significantly decreased in Arizona. About 4,300 cases were reported the week of March 28. Percent positivity remained around 4% for the week of March 28 and the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 continues to remain low, with only about 8% of inpatient beds occupied by COVID patients.

As of today, nearly 3.9 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Arizona with nearly 2.5 million Arizonans (34%) receiving their first doses of vaccine and nearly 1.6 million fully vaccinated. Over 415,000 doses of vaccine were administered throughout Arizona last week.

Over three quarters of Arizonans 65 and older have been vaccinated and over half of those 55 and older.

More vaccine data at the state and county level is available on our Data Dashboard

At the beginning of the week, ADHS announced one million doses of vaccine administered across all state vaccination sites.

In total, over 28% of all doses administered in Arizona have been administered at a state vaccination site. Over 167,000 doses were administered at state PODs in the last week.

This Friday at 11 AM tens of thousands of appointments will be released across all state vaccination sites - State Farm Stadium, Desert Financial Arena, Southeast Mesa (Dexcom), University of Arizona, and Yuma Civic Center. All Arizonans 16 and older are eligible to book these appointments, which will span from April 12 through April 18.  Appointments can be booked online at http://podvaccine.azdhs.gov/ or by calling 1-844-542-8201 for assistance in English and Spanish. A video tutorial on online appointment scheduling is available here. As state sites experience cancellations or no-shows, additional appointments are added throughout the week.

Last weekend, the State Farm Stadium site transitioned to overnight operations between the hours of 5 PM and 9 AM each day. On April 23, the State Farm Stadium site will transition indoors to Gila River Arena to continue providing vaccinations in the Glendale area.

On Monday, we launched the Valley’s first indoor drive-through vaccination site at the Dexcom warehouse in Southeast Mesa.

Next Monday April 12, Phoenix Municipal Stadium will transition indoors, shifting operations into Desert Financial Arena on ASU’s campus. All patients with vaccination appointments previously scheduled at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on April 12th and beyond will now receive their vaccination at the same time indoors at Desert Financial Arena. Free parking will be available to patients near the arena, which is also conveniently located near public transportation including the light rail, bus, and neighborhood circulators.

This week, ADHS announced the opening of a brand-new state vaccination site in the North Valley at WestWorld in Scottsdale. This indoor site will begin operations on April 22.

In addition to running large scale vaccination sites, ADHS has partnered with Ability360, the Arc, Special Olympics, and DES to offer vaccinations to individuals with disabilities and their families at familiar community locations. This weekend, between two and three thousand individuals will be vaccinated at an event on Ability360’s campus. Future similar events are being planned.

To complement this effort, ADHS has partnered with the DES Division of Developmental Disabilities to coordinate vaccination appointments for their members at state run vaccination sites. This augments work being done at the county level with DES to offer in-home vaccinations for individuals who cannot leave their homes.

This week, over 425,000 doses of Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen vaccine arrived throughout the state, an increase of nearly 50,000 doses compared to the prior week. Federal partners have indicated a smaller amount of Janssen vaccine to be allocated in upcoming weeks.

A list and map of vaccination sites throughout Arizona with contact and registration information is available at azhealth.gov/findvaccine and is routinely updated as new vaccination sites are added.

Approximately 630 retail pharmacy locations throughout Arizona are receiving a direct allocation of vaccine from the federal government. Current participants include Fry’s, Safeway/Albertsons, Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Costco and Basha’s/Food City. Sixty-five community health centers and FQHCs are receiving a supplemental vaccine allocation through a direct federal allocation.
We request everyone wear a mask while visiting Town offices.
Police Updates
Coffee with a Cop, April 2021

On April 7th, Amanda O’Halloran from the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority presented for residents at the Paradise Valley Police Department’s monthly Coffee with a Cop event. Residents learned about the myths and realities of vehicle theft.

For example, did you know older cars are easier and faster to steal? Seven of the 10 most stolen vehicles in Arizona are over 10 years old and five of those are over 20 years old. Learn more by watching the full video: https://youtu.be/5n6UMpKools
Advisory Committee on Public Safety

The Advisory Committee on Public Safety (ACOPS) met on Tuesday evening. ACOPS will be chaired this year by Council Member Anna Thomasson. We also welcomed three new members Jim Hawthorne, Kathy Petsas, and Mark Winograd.

The Committee also thanked the outgoing members for their service, including former Chair Council Member Ellen Andeen, Mike Cummiskey, Jeff Gaia, and Paul Moore. ACOPS heard updates on the Police Department’s Nine O’clock Walk efforts and recent legislative efforts on short-term rentals and photo enforcement.

April 8, 2021 Council Meeting Summary
During the Study Session prior to the business meeting, the Council heard the monthly financial update from CFO Doug Allen. To find out how the Town is doing financially, you can check out the revenue portion of the update here.

The highlight of the financial update is the incredible ability of the Council to improve the PSPRS funded ratio from just 25% in 2014 to 85% in 2020. This was primarily accomplished by strategically timing $18M lump sum payments to the public safety pension fund over the last four years. Last night the Town Council directed staff to fund 90% of the pension fund and let the market cover the rest. By lowering the "unfunded liability contribution rates" the Town has already realized over $2.8M in budgetary savings over the last 4 fiscal years. This was extremely important to the Town and our finances during this past uncertain pandemic year.

Here is the action summary of last night's Council meeting and its video.
