We are so excited to be continuing our work with Leave No Trace. The first phase of the project, launching this month, will focus on increasing traveler awareness of tribal lands, not just in an historic context, but with modern-day considerations — including the what and where, the histories and the information needed to be a respectful and responsible visitor. 

AIANTA and Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics ask for your input as a contributing author/editor to this project so your community can help authentically educate travelers before they arrive on tribal lands while also encouraging exploration that is satisfactory to tribes and travelers. In 2008, Akwesasne leaders built their “Sharing the Spirit” imitative, which eventually paved the way for the formalized Akwesasne Cultural Tourism Strategic Action Plan. Today, implementation of the plan has led to a new tourism website, Akwesasne.travel, elevated tourism training for Akwesasne artisans, and increased awareness of Akwesasne culture and heritage. Join Penny Peters, Tourism Industry Development Manager, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, in discussing how the strategic plan was conceptualized and how it continues to guide Akwesasne’s tourism planning.

In case you missed it, AIANTA produced a special webinar introducing our new Visitor Outreach department and our plans to market to domestic and international travelers for 2022. Visitor Outreach Manager Maureen Chavez (Pueblo of Acoma) led the conversation on top overseas markets to Indian Country, top travel trade shows to attend next year, and how to prepare for the return of international visitors.
