Paternity Affidavit Revised in 2019
Last year, the Bureau of Health Statistics and the Iowa Child Support Recovery Unit worked together to create a simplified VPA form to help reduce errors and rejections. The revised form was made available on July 1, 2019.

We will highlight changes to the VPA form in each upcoming newsletter.

If you are interested in receiving training on the new form, please click the link below to schedule with us .
Updated Educational Brochures
Updated brochures are now available! We recently completed refreshing several of our outreach and training brochures, including the following:

  • Frequently Asked Questions (English and Spanish)
  • Unmarried Parents (English and Spanish)
  • How to Establish Paternity
  • Notary and Signature Section
  • Resource Guide

Our updated materials feature a new VPA graphic icon, displayed above, designed by Miles Tritle with the ISU Child Welfare Research and Training Project. Look for the icon on these brochures to ensure you have the most current version.

If you placed an order for any of these materials in the past few months during the revision process, your order has been filled and shipped.

To order copies of any of our free brochures, please click below to fill out a short order form.
Meet the new VPA Outreach Coordinator
Hello, everyone! My name is Amy Peters, and I am the new Voluntary Paternity Affidavit Outreach Coordinator with the Child Welfare Research and Training Project (CWRTP) at Iowa State University.

My background is in social work, and includes health education and advocacy outreach with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Kansas City, and the American Heart Association in Des Moines.

I am an Ames native, and live there with my family. I am a mom to 2 teenage boys and 2 dogs, all of whom keep me on my toes!

I look forward to getting to know you and finding ways to support your efforts to educate parents about the importance of establishing paternity.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to talk about training opportunities.

Upcoming Projects
Parenting Program Survey
The VPA Outreach Program is working with the Iowa Fatherhood Network to collect and disseminate information about parenting programs offered across the state. A brief survey is being distributed to community service organizations to gather that information.

You can help us build a comprehensive listing of programs in 2 ways:

  • If you provide programming to parents, please click below to take the survey. It is estimated to take no more than 5-8 minutes to complete

When we have the information compiled, it will be shared widely to make it easily accessible to anyone looking for resources for engaging parents.

Thank you for your help!
Digital Media
We are continuing to update our outreach and training materials and resources.

A new informational video to replace "The Power of 2" is being developed, as well as a web-based instructional training on how to complete the VPA form.

The VPA website is also being updated with new brochure information and simplified navigation.
