123rd Annual Spring Scientific Convention

The 123rd annual Spring Scientific Convention was held in Southfield, Michigan, May 19-22. We would like to thank all of the attendees, speakers, the President and Executive Director of the American Osteopathic Association, and our sponsors for helping the MOA carry on a tradition dating back to 1899.
AOA CEO Dr. Kevin Klauer, AOA President Dr. Joseph A. Giaimo,
and Dr. Bruce Wolf, AOA Trustee and past-president of the MOA

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) CEO Dr. Kevin Klauer and AOA President Dr. Joseph A. Giaimo, joined in the lectures and events surrounding the MIchigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) Spring Scientific Convention. Visiting various events and mingling with the attendees, each made themselves available to the attendees. Whether it was the lifetime physicians of the 49'ers Club or the Women of Excellence, the AOA certainly made it clear they are eager to stay connected to the MOA.
Women of Excellence Committee Honors
Dr. Mary Goldman

The 2022 meeting of the Women of Excellence was held in conjunction with the MOA Spring convention. Each year the committee bestows an honor to recognize a female osteopathic physician who has provided exemplary leadership in the field of medicine.

The 2022 Women of Excellence was presented to Mary Goldman, DO.
"The Women of Excellence Committee is so pleased to honor Mary Goldman, DO as this year's award recipient. She has been an advocate to the profession all her life. She continues to strive to educate the next generation of osteopathic physicians about the distinctiveness of osteopathy and lends her talents in teaching osteopathic manipulative medicine through her continued engagement in education. We are so grateful to her example. She embodies what it means to lead by example. Congratulations Dr Goldman! Thank you for all that you do!"

MOPAC donations and pledges

Thank you to all who invested in their profession by donating to the Michigan Osteopathic Political Committee (MOPAC) during the House of Delegates and during Spring Convention.

Thank you to all who made pledges and have yet to donate.

For all of those who have not donated—know that donations are down, but unfortunately, the need for political action has not.

Spring Science Research Exhibit Competition

The Michigan Osteopathic Association held the annual Spring Scientific Research Exhibit competition as part of the 123rd Annual Spring Scientific Convention. The competitions provide osteopathic medical students, osteopathic residents, fellows and attending level physicians throughout Michigan an opportunity to present their medical and scientific research. Once again, the quality of the exhibits and oral presentations were amazing and the judges were tasked with divining winners through the extremely close scoring.

Public Health Over Politicians

The Michigan Osteopathic Association collaborated with Public Health Over Physicians (PHOP) to provide support to stop an effort by special interest groups to radically change the Public Health Act, removing decisions on community health from experts to politicians.
This effort failed. It was announced May 31 that Unlock Michigan 2.0 would not be submitting its petition signatures ahead of the required deadline. Michigan law currently authorizes the state health director to declare emergencies when he or she determines that control of infectious disease outbreaks is necessary to protect public health.

"I am glad that the efforts of Public Health Over Politicians (PHOP) was instrumental in leading an educational effort that encouraged voters to reject Unlock Michigan 2.0, which was a reckless and dangerous ballot initiative that would have hamstrung public health orders intended to save lives. I am glad that the MOA and MAOFP supported PHOP and were able to bring the physicians perspective to this effort.
—David Best, DO, Immediate Past President of the Michigan Osteopathic Association
