Hello All,
December’s here! The end of the year is just around the corner!
| |
Do you think maybe time’s moving along just a little too fast? I had the thought recently that the world may be experiencing a Global Speeding Crisis. Or worse, an accelerated time-space-reality and gravity warp? Or maybe even a…
.
But then I thought, nah… it’s just December, and the end of the year is just around the corner.
I did miss the November Newsletter. I’m glad that Natalie was able to fill you in while I was gone. November sent me to the Equine Affaire Horse Expo in Massachusetts, and before that to the Mark Rashid, Jim, Dianne Adel and Dr. Stephen Peters clinic in Arroyo Grande, CA - which was wonderful. Anita Parra hosts Mark Rashid, Dianne Adel and me at her Big Horse Ranch every year, and this year she took on Dr. Peters' Your Horse’s Brain clinic, which gets better every year.
Mark and I have been doing Considering the Horse – Mind and Body clinics for quite a few years at various venues around the country. What I learn doing these with Mark grows every year. When you take what Mark has to offer, what I have to offer, and the different challenges that each horse and owner have to offer the learning becomes exponential. When you add Dr. Peters to the clinic the learning becomes double-exponential, whatever that adds up to.
Back to December, and the end of the world… I mean, year. I shall be at home until the end of January when I’ll be joining Mark for another collaborative clinic at the River Horse Ranch in Cave Creek, AZ.
I believe there’s still room for auditors. Auditors get a pretty good deal at these clinics, listening to us stumble our way through six individual horse-rider combinations and the physical, mental and emotional components that they all bring to the arena. If you’re within driving distance of Arizona or have some air-miles to spare, don’t miss it. And if you’re within driving or flying distance of Sedalia, CO, then Mark and Dr. Peters and I will be there in July, so don’t miss that!
“In the Year 2023” - Blast to the sixties (for those over 60 : )
| |
Speaking of missing things, where did 2023 go? What opportunities did we have - or miss - to accomplish something worthwhile? We all work with horses and one thing that horses offer is an opportunity for us to do better, for us and for them.
When I first started doing this and saw how something as simple as the Bladder Meridian Technique could make such a difference in the horse and the human I knew that I now had a very simple goal, that every horse on the planet experience the Bladder Meridian at least once. It’s a simple and on-going goal. That doesn’t mean things don’t get complicated around it, but it keeps us heading in the right direction, and that is teaching as many people as possible how to do this simple technique, and motivating them to go out and do it themselves and to show it to other people.
You can start here (when you’re done rockin’ out on the 60’s music : )
| |
Doing the math for 2023:
Horses and humans reached by MM directly in 2023:
at Masterson Method Courses – 1,923 humans and 2,155 horses at 221 courses
at Mark, Jim and Dr. Peters Collaborative Clinics – 238 humans and 15-20 horses
at Horse Expos – a bunch
Horses and humans reached via MM books and videos in 2023:
approx. 3,545 books and videos sold through MM, and a bunch more through our excellent publisher Trafalgar Square Books
Plus we have over 500 Masterson Method Certified Practitioners out there (working diligently every day : )
According to the World Animal Foundation there are 60 million horses on the planet. So, unless we 6,106 humans plan on doing at least 24 horses every day (I took out the 6 million wild horses for those of us over 60), then we better start sharing this simple Bladder Meridian Technique with as many people as we can. Easy Peasy!
Add a Couple More People
A couple more people I appreciate who’re out there helping people and their horses:
I witnessed an enlightening presentation on bits by Daniel Dauphin a couple of years ago. I recognized a like-minded horseman in him and have gotten to know him a little better. He has a fun podcast called Adult-Onset Horsemanship, and a video on bits that I’d recommend to everyone. I just noticed he has Jec Ballou (another like-minded horse person) on his podcast, and he has a bunch of entertaining and educational videos on his youtube channel.
Another person I’ve come to know and appreciate this year, and who’s helped me to keep things human and simple is Kerri Lake. You may have seen/heard her on Warwick Schiller’s Journey On Podcast Summit. I could tell you about her but you really should get to know her yourselves, and you can do this by going here:
www.generateharmony.com or here: Journey On Podcast Summit
For the Love of the Horse
You know, I’ve picked up Mark Rashid’s books to read bits and pieces over the years, but never took the time to sit down and read one cover to cover. I did that this year with his latest book For the Love of the Horse: Looking Back, Looking Forward. If you want to learn about the horse from the inside out, this is the place to go. Just sayin’.

What else?
You’ll read below that things are picking up in Japan. Our Instructor Tomoko Sembongi is teaching Seminars there, and her efforts to sign on a Japanese publisher have paid off with the publication of Beyond Horse Massage in Japanese!
テモコさん、おめでとうございます!
Congratulations Tomoko! (I hope Google Translate got this right!)
And Vicky Devlin has news from Australia and the UK with more fun photos farther down.
And finally…
Although here on this side of the pond things have gone well this year, some things have gone weller than others. All things must pass, and this fall we lost two of the most weller things in our lives. Our aussie Popper who brought us 14 years of joy moved on in October, and our beautiful mare Annabelle (seen below, and at the top of this letter) left us last week.
| | | Annabelle and her full brother Jeremiah have been our partners for over 26 years. We got them when Annabelle was two and Jeremiah was three and they’ve been bringing us joy and teaching us about life ever since. Jeremiah (on the left below) is going to hang around and we’ll all be feeling a big empty spot for a while but this too will pass, and things will be better soon. |
Until then
Enjoy your horses.

Give a Christmas Gift to Yourself!
Enjoy the nearly SIX-HOUR online streaming option with recorded lectures by Dr. Peters on the horse’s brain, offering insights into their behavior.
You will learn to deepen your relationship by creating an environment built on trust and feeling safe. By using your horse’s brain functioning and neurochemistry you will learn how to help them reset their nervous system and self-regulate their behavior.
This recording includes three presentations:
🔸A dissection of a horse brain by Dr. Peters showing each region and its function.
🔸A demo by Jim Masterson working on a horse and discussing how the horse releases tension from the perspective of Dr. Peter’s lecture.
🔸A presentation by Mark Rashid showing how to more effectively work with the horse using the science of horse brain function.
Take the wisdom of Dr. Peters, Jim Masterson, and Mark Rashid to the barn, and you’re guaranteed to grow new dendrites and neural connections in both your brain and your horse’s brain!!

You Can Never Start Too Young
MMCP and Instructor Nikki Kagan recently taught a Weekend Seminar in Israel. While only having one student, healing was felt by several horses and more humans than expected.
Read on...
The horse is Oreo (pictured below) and he's over 20 years old. Very skinny and very nervous.
Noga kept her eyes on Oreo's eye and was so tuned into him. She'd watch if he held his breath, if he blinked and when she felt she needed to hold and wait for a release. The two of them became one mind. It was a moving experience. They were so connected to each other during the process (that's why she was allowed to crouch by his legs towards the end).
These are stressful days. I very much appreciate your kind words and prayers for good to pervade this land. Deena

I wish I had started as a third-grader!
No better feeling - for horse or human!
Special thank you to Oreo, Noga, and Noga's parents, who gave permission to tell this story and use the photos.
The Masterson Method® was represented at the Horsemanship Showcase on the 25th and 26th of November at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre.
There were some great presentations by some famous and not-so-famous trainers including Clive Johnson, Oliver Philips, Ben Atkinson, Warwick Schiller, Jason Webb, Steve Young and Think like a Pony. Instructor and MMCP Vicky Devlin, MMCP Sam Naylor and Alex Gache had a booth selling books and DVD's and were impressed that pretty much everyone there had already heard of that guy called Jim Masterson. Each day was topped off by a magnificent show of horsemanship by Destiny Equestrian Theatre. The good news is more people in the UK are now proud owners of the Beyond Horse Massage and Beyond Dog Massage book. The 2024 seminars are filling already!
| |
Vicky Devlin had another successful trip down under, and she could not do it without the help of Instructors Emma Young and Gypsy Merritt, and New Zealand Instructor Nadine Vollmerg.
Everything was super organized, courses were full and the highlight was certifying six new MMCP's in Australia and New Zealand.
Vicky asked: "Is work meant to be so much fun?"
Here are few pics to prove she is taking her teaching seriously.
|
I think that horse is laughing at one of her jokes!
| |
Congratulations to our new MMCPs!
|
Vicky will be heading Down Under again in October 2024.
Details will be on the website soon.

About the Masterson Method Equine Specialist Program
The Masterson Method Equine Specialist specializes in sharing specific light touch Masterson Method techniques with persons served in equine-assisted learning and therapy programs. By doing this bodywork on horses, participants deepen their connection with horses while also gaining self-awareness and self-regulation skills; meanwhile, therapy horses are tended to through simple bodywork and learn a new way of relating to people. It's a win/win!

Christie Koon, MMCP
Raleigh, North Carolina
Having grown up as ‘just a kid with a horse’, the relational aspect was what my memories of those years held. When I returned to the horse world, I still sought relationship more than the ride. Upon hearing someone at a barn mention the Bladder Meridian and then researching the Masterson Method®, I was intrigued by the search, response, stay, release aspect…relationship rediscovered! I felt like I found my herd.
I am a PATH certified ESMHL and volunteer at a Therapeutic Riding barn where we have EAL and EAP. As we all know, horse and human interactions whether on the ground or in the saddle come with a give and a take both physically and emotionally for both the horse and human. I feel like the Masterson Method helps the balance of that give and take.

Leah Nissim, MMCP
Madrid, Spain
My MM Journey started when I discovered this fascinating method in 2019 and I was lucky to be able to get to know it better thanks to a year of monthly zoom sessions with Jim Masterson during the pandemic from 2020-2021.
As soon as I was able to travel in July 2022, I completed the courses and coaching training in England, Germany and Holland.
I used mostly sports horses for my case studies, especially Show Jumpers. This has helped me see common patterns of tension and restrictions in these types of horses.
I am also a Certified Equine Ergonomist, which helps me assess the saddle fit on the horse. I am following the TACT trimming methodology, which also helps me recognize hoof issues.
I am constantly studying and researching anatomy, and relevant topics concerning the horse’s welfare and health. I like to be up to date not only with the latest discoveries but also ancient remedies, like TCM and herbal remedies.
I am available for sessions in Madrid.

Janet Stephen, MMCP
High River, Alberta, Canada
Hi, I’m Janet and I live in High River, AB which is home to the TV series Heartland! I received my human massage certification 25 years ago and used it on and off while working in the film industry. I did not grow up with horses but always found a way to be around them, like the one summer when I got my grooms card for the thoroughbred racing season in Calgary. Fast forward to 11 years ago when I saw Cowboy Mounted Shooting and decided what the heck, “Let’s buy a horse and some guns!”. One of my horses was a troubled soul and the “teacher horse”. He is the reason why I searched out ways to connect with him. The Masterson Method® allowed me to gain his trust and helped me soften as a rider.
I have been volunteering with Journeys Therapeutic Riding Society for 7 years and assisting at the Masterson clinics in Calgary and Kelowna for the past few years. I really enjoy sharing The Masterson Method® with my clients and anyone who will listen, including the HORSE! I travel throughout southern and central Alberta. I hope to become an instructor as I believe everyone can learn to connect to their horse on a deeper level.

Sarah Gosch, MMCP
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Sarah has been riding and working with horses since 2001. She has a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary and Biomedical Science with a minor in Equine Science from Penn State and currently manages a farm just outside of Pittsburgh. Sarah feels that the connection and bonding is what makes spending time with horses so special, and her introduction to the Masterson Method® in 2013 has helped her to deepen that connection. The most amazing facet of the work is the back and forth “conversation” between horse and human throughout the session.
Throughout her time working with horses and going through the extensive Masterson Method® certification process, she has learned to really tune in and listen to the horse as she works and modify the direction of the session using that feedback. Sarah has seen great results from these interactive body work sessions in her own horses and many other horses that she has worked with over the years. She is excited to have the opportunity to share the Masterson Method® with others and help horses feel the best that they can!

Catherin Gunkel, MMCP
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
In 2020, Catherin re-connected with her love of horses by working at a Quarter Horse farm in Alberta. She realized how much she missed working with these magnificent creatures and began a learning journey to understand and provide help for horses of all ages and conditions.
Originally trained as a physical therapist for humans, her skill sets easily transferred to the equine environment. This has allowed Catherin to identify physical imbalances and behavioral issues emanating from physical, emotional, or mental problems in horses. One particular horse, Dallas, did not wish to be touched as trust in humans had been lost. Trying to find a solution for this beautiful animal, it led Catherin to study the Masterson Method® in 2020. She learned to do the Bladder Meridian Technique from a distance, leading Dallas to learn to trust people and be touched again. Dallas also learned that this type of touch was not painful and helped him release tension in his body, thereby making him more comfortable.
In September 2023, Catherin became a certified MMCP. Under ‘The Equine Bodyworker’ she offers her service in Calgary and surrounding areas.
Catherin’s passion is to see the bigger picture of the whole horse, and by utilizing the Masterson Method® techniques, she believes in bringing a valuable treatment option to horses and their owners that will support their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Catherin loves to co-operate with all other equine professionals by working in a team environment helping the horse and owner/rider to optimize their performance – especially in the world of equine competition. She sees a huge value by collaborating with horse trainers, riding instructors, bodyworkers, and owners to create a plan with daily exercises and routines thereby improving the horse’s and rider’s performance.

Sarah Bibby, MMCP
Tvedestrand, Norway
Hi – my name is Sarah and my passion is working with the horses and ponies in my community here in Norway regardless of their breed or discipline, which in turn drives me in my work as an MMCP.
I was bitten by the bug at a young age but my career, marriage and children took me in another direction and I had a short break from horses. I returned to horses when time allowed and then in 2014 work commitments meant that we relocated from the UK to Norway with Harvey my horse, our dog and my Husband, leaving our children, family and friends back in England.
I found a passion in the holistic approach to caring for Harvey and learned techniques from my vet and Harvey’s therapist. He certainly benefited from what I learned studying the Masterson books and online videos. In 2022, Harvey peacefully at the ripe age of 28 passed away and he gave me drive to become an MMCP and I continued my education in alternative therapies that fit alongside the Masterson Method®.
I work with a wide range of horses from the companion Shetland, native breeds working in harness and ridden, trotters, dressage horses, show jumpers, family mounts and young stock. I am willing to collaborate and be part of the bigger team to keep your horse happy and healthy in body and mind.

Newly Certified Equine Specialists
Our Certified Equine Specialists have worked through an abbreviated certification program designed to be accessible and relevant for equine-assisted services (EAS) professionals and volunteers. The MMES can volunteer to offer simple bodywork to EAS horses and/or partner with their EAS program to co-facilitate a new equine-assisted learning activity, such as the Bladder Meridian Technique, as a means for participants to “give back to the horse” while also creating connection.

Connie Holt, MMES
Dardanelle, Arkansas
I learned about the Masterson Method® at a PATH International conference. I was excited when I discovered we could host an MMES training at our facility. I have been a horse lover my entire life – I grew up breaking, training and then barrel racing. I was a Head Start Center Director for 20 years before becoming a volunteer at Equestrian Zone. In 2017 I became Equestrian Zone’s Executive Director, Barn Manager, Volunteer Coordinator and Grant Writer. Equestrian Zone is a PATH International Center that provides therapy using OT, PT and Speech, along with Therapeutic Riding. A Veterans’ program called 2 Hearts 2 One will be started in 2024.
I am a Path International Certified Riding Instructor (CTRI), Equine Specialist Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL), Mentor and Co-Chair for Arkansas. Now I can add my certification of the Masterson Method Equine Specialist (MMES) through Jim Masterson. I enjoy life by sharing my passion of horses with people of all abilities. Our horses are super special – most are show horses that could not continue the rigorous pace of the show world but are super stars at our facility. After my certification in MMES, I now have the knowledge and ability to help the nine horses we use at our facility that fulfill mine and all of my riders’ dreams.

Jessica Kasinoff, MMES
Raleigh, North Carolina
Jessica felt the call of horses late in life. Except for a few trail rides during Yoga retreats on a ranch, Jessica first began riding lessons in middle age. Her love & excitement quickly instilled a deep passion.
While she enjoys riding, Jessica is most interested in horses’ profound ability to be in connection with humans. Jessica builds strong bonds with horses and they support her to be in her strength, emotionally & spiritually.
As a Psychotherapist certified in Somatic Experiencing, Jessica was immediately taken by the Masterson Method® bodywork techniques. She resonates with the idea that a horse can benefit from support to allow “stuck” traumas to move through their system and then return to homeostasis. After taking both the weekend course and the five-day program, Jessica pursued the MMES track. It is a perfect fit as Jessica believes horses are spiritual beings who have much to offer us. Jessica feels passionate about giving to horses who work hard to help people.
Jessica enjoys volunteering with an organization in Raleigh, NC that pairs rescue horses with at-risk teens. She cherishes the precious and powerful connection the horses so graciously offer her.
