A Message to EPICureans

We had hoped to be able to greet one another in person this Fall season but both University policies and good public health practice are restricting us to Zoom for a while longer. The good news is that most of us have gotten to do pretty well at Zooming around the pixillated ether-world and EPIC has been able to maintain a full schedule of activities, including an amazingly seamless transition for our yoga classes - not one session missed and attendance ever growing. (Thank you Prof. Emerita Ginny Papaioannou and Diana Dumitru for making this happen!) When University protocols change, and we can safely gather again in person, we intend for all meetings to be hybrid - in-person and online - so that those who can't attend in person, can still participate fully.

We hope to "see" you all soon. Have an idea for something you would like to learn about? Let us know.

Jeanne Mager Stellman, President EPIC
Professor Emerita, Mailman School of Public Health
EPIC Conversation
Andreas Huyssen, Villard Professor Emeritus of German and Comparative Literature will engage in conversation with Marianne Hirsch, William Peterfield Trent Professor of English and Comparative Literature. Huyssen, whose work has been widely published in German and English and translated into many languages, is the founding director of the Center for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University. He is a former chair of the Department of Germanic Languages and the 2005 winner of the coveted Mark Van Doren teaching award. A conversation between Huyssen and Hirsch, acclaimed experts in the politics of memory and memory study, is certain to be an engaging event.

ONLINE EPIC Yoga: Every Thursday
10 am - 11 am and 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Professor Emerita Virginia Papaioannou, a registered teacher with the Yoga Alliance, leads EPIC Yoga.
No prior experience is required to join. Yoga can benefit people at all levels of physical training and health, but it is always wise to consult with a physician before undertaking any new exercise regime. Modifications will be offered to any participants with specific limitations arising from recovery from injury, arthritis, limited movement, or other causes.

Two one-hour classes are offered each week. The 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. class practices breathing techniques and moves through some basic yoga poses, concentrating on alignment, balance, and flexibility. Those with experience move more deeply into the poses. From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., we practice gentle/chair yoga, which is ideal for those of more limited mobility or flexibility. Classes include breathing, stretching, and yoga poses, done either seated in a chair or standing. No yoga mats are required for this class.
