PARENTING TIPS FROM CHALLENGE SUCCESS
What is success?
It is NOT just kids who check off the list:
  • School
  • College
  • Job

It IS kids who:
  • Know who they are
  • Know they can get through hard things
  • Are confident that they will be okay no matter what
  • Are adaptable and capable

MORE PARENTING TIPS
  • The mood of the household reflects the kid’s mood. Anxiety spreads like wildfire.
  • Magic words parents can say to their children: "TELL ME MORE"
  • You have two ears and one mouth...for a reason.
  • The most important thing in peoples’ lives is connection. Through connections, kids will gain the skill of figuring out who matters to them and who are ‘their people’ in these times.
  • Kids need two things: to be understood and seen.

LAGUNA STUDENTS TO PERFORM IN THE SOUND OF MUSIC
Live and Outdoors!
Two Laguna students, Katherine Ball '23 and Noah Olorin '24, will star in Lights Up! Theatre Company's production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. It will be staged live and outdoors at Garden Street Academy on May 13-16 at 6:30PM. Read more about these Owls and their roles in the show below.
Katherine Ball
playing Mother Abbess

Katherine is thrilled to perform again, live this spring. She recently played Antonia and Anselmo in Lights Up’s filmed performance of The Man of La Mancha in March, and some of her other favorite roles include The Witch in Big Fish, Psyche in Cupid and Psyche with Boxtales Theatre Company, and Cosette in Les Misérables. She also enjoys caroling every holiday season. She is grateful for every opportunity to share her passion for musical theater.
Noah Olorin
playing Captain Von Trapp

Noah is a storyteller. His artistic interests span from prose and poetry to improv and dance. He is a writer of books, poems, and songs, guitarist and singer. He recently played Doctor Carrasco and the Duke in Lights Up’s The Man of La Mancha filmed this past March. Finding a love of theatre through Boxtales Theater Company, he later joined Lights Up! to play Zacky Price in Big Fish, Duke Orsino in Twelfth Night, and Marcellus Washburn and Mayor Shinn in The Music Man. He likes singing around the fire, and prefers to go outside when it’s raining.
ZACK MOORE NAMED 2021 FINALIST FOR PRESIDENTIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHING
California Department of Education News Release

Even through the challenges of remote learning and the COVID-19 pandemic, California teachers continue to find ways to bring out the curiosity, excellence, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities in students. Yesterday, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond honored six exceptional mathematics and science teachers, naming them as finalists from California for the 2021 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

“This has been a year full of significant challenges for students—personal, economic, and social. The teachers recognized are giving their students the tools to help them tackle difficulties, find creative solutions, ask questions, and be the problem-solvers we need for the challenges of tomorrow,” Thurmond said. “These incredible educational mentors are driving preparation in math, technology, engineering, and science, including computer science, that connect students with the world around them and help them grow their skills to persevere in any endeavor.”

LEGO BRICKS STILL NEEDED
This summer, Laguna is hosting a LEGO Masters camp series, with each week featuring a different theme and age bracket, ranging from rising kindergarten students to sixth grade.

In order to maintain COVID safety protocols, we will need a considerable number of LEGO bricks of all shapes, sizes, and colors. If your family has unwanted bricks to donate, please drop off to the main office on either campus, Attention Clara. No sets or other brand names please.

Thank you so much!
THIS WEEK'S GRATITUDE GRAM
This week's Gratitude Gram goes out to Laguna's Bus Driver, Alberto Abrego-Hernandez!

Alberto is thoughtful, caring, and dedicated. He has spent two decades transporting our community safely, and we couldn't think of a better person for the role! Alberto makes a lasting impact on our students, which was evident when last year's senior class voted to dedicate the 2019-20 yearbook to him. Alberto's positivity, kindness, and job well done do not go unnoticed. We are grateful for you, Alberto!

Read what Alberto's colleagues have to say about him below:

"Alberto is one of our best and loyal unsung heroes in our Laguna Community. He not only takes great pride in his role within our school, but he is also a great listener and gives sound, sage advice. You are so appreciated, Alberto!"

"I love coming into to the faculty room and finding Alberto there. He is always welcoming and asks me how I’m doing as if he really wants to know and is genuinely concerned about my answer."

"Alberto’s professionalism and care for our students safety and wellbeing are a few of the attributes that make him the ideal person to transport our most valuable assets."
