Proudly Announcing the Sondheim Semifinalists
|

The Janet & Walter Sondheim Art Prize is the Greater Baltimore area's most prestigious art prize. Now in its 17th year, the competition attracts visual artists who work in a variety of mediums to apply. A panel of three jurors — all accomplished experts in their own right — reviews the applicants and selects the pool of semifinalists who will move on to the next stage.
This year's semifinalists represent the immense talent that exists in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. These artists work in film, fiber, paint, paper, sculpture, and photography, among other mediums. Their work addresses social and cultural identities, historical conspiracies, mythologies, power imbalances, and more. Here are the 2022 Sondheim Art Prize semifinalists:
Tommy Bobo (Washington, DC), Marybeth Chew (Baltimore, MD), Sue Crawford (Baltimore, MD), Andrew Gray (Baltimore, MD), Maren Henson (Baltimore, MD), Megan Koeppel (Baltimore, MD), Travis Levasseur (Baltimore, MD), Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann (Washington, DC), David Page (Baltimore, MD), Mojdeh Rezaeipour (Washington, DC), Amber Robles-Gordon (Washington, DC), Katiana Weems (Baltimore, MD), and James Williams II (Baltimore, MD).
The three semifinalists who are selected for final review for the Sondheim Art Prize will be announced in April. Until then, let's get to know our semifinalists! BOPA BY THE NUMBERS
Quantifying the Impact of Arts Across the City
|

|
|
The 13 semifinalists will be asked to share an expanded submission including up to 30 images or time-based works and a description of how they will use the fellowship if they are selected. The jurors will then select three of the semifinalists for final review for the prize and their work will be exhibited in the Walters Art Museum in July 2022. The three finalists will be announced in April. |
|

|
This year, the Janet & Walter Sondheim Art Prize will award $30,000 to a visual artist or artist collaborators living and working in the Baltimore region. The award will be paid in monthly installments: $8,000 will be paid for the first month and $2,000 for each of the following 11 months. If artist collaborators are selected the payments will be equally divided between the collaborating artists. |

The jurors will award the two finalists not selected for the Sondheim Art Prize one of two residencies: a six-week, fully funded residency at Civitella Ranieri in the Umbria region of Italy, and a six-month residency at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower in Baltimore. Each of these unique and inspiring settings will give these artists space to explore and continue to deepen their practice. |

The Emerge Baltimore exhibition series continues at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower with the work of three incredible artists: Aliana Grace Bailey, Raquel Thompson, and Derrick 'DJ' Smith. On Saturday, March 12, from 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., you are cordially invited to visit The Cloisters during our Open House Plus. This event is designed to help newly-engaged couples get a jump-start on wedding planning. Couples will get a tour of the castle and meet with an array of local vendors — from caterers to photographers to DJs and more. OCEAN CITY FILM FESTIVAL BEGINS
100+ Independant Films From All Over the World

The sixth annual Ocean City Film Festival kicks off Thursday, March 3, and runs through Sunday, March 6, in Ocean City, Maryland. Over 100 independent films will be shown over the course of the weekend — 17 of which were produced in Maryland. If you can't make it over to the Eastern Shore, you can still participate. Virtual access to the film catalog will be available to all-access passholders. COMMUNITY DAY AT THE BMA
Activities Inspired by the Joan Mitchell Exhibition

Enjoy a day of celebration at the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) inspired by the new Joan Mitchell exhibition. On Saturday, March 6, from 1:00–5:00 p.m., experience live improvisational music performances produced in partnership with the High Zero Foundation, French pastries crafted by Crust by Mack, a hands-on painting workshop with artist Katie Pumphrey, and free admission to the exhibition. CITYLIT FESTIVAL PRESENTS
Writing, Revising, & Editing YOUR Story

CityLit Project presents the 19th annual CityLit Festival, a celebration of literature for readers and writers alike. "How We Break Free: Confronting Hard Truths" is the underlying theme of the month-long event this year.
On Tuesday, March 8, from 7:00–8:30 p.m., join some of the nation’s literary finest online as they discuss revision, editing, the bold undertaking of writing the body through trauma and desire, and more in a 90-minute craft intensive. VIRTUAL STATE POETRY COMPETITION

On Thursday, March 10, from 4:00–6:00 p.m., join the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) for Maryland’s 2022 Poetry Out Loud State Competition. This event will be live-streamed with ASL interpreters and live captioning available. This poetry recitation contest is co-sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and The Poetry Foundation, and administered by U.S. state arts agencies and regional arts organizations across the country.
