From the Minister

My Dear Friends--

Earlier this afternoon we gathered for the first of our two congregation-wide conversations about the work of our Memorial Committee. Chaired by former King's Chapel Warden Dean Denniston, the Committee was formed in response to our years-long examination of King's Chapel's history with slavery. Two subcommittees, led by former Wardens Miguel Gómez-Ibáñez and Cliff Allen have been exploring the creation of a physical memorial to commemorate those enslaved persons connected to King's Chapel and the creation of a living memorial to fund the work of reparative justice moving forward. This work is at once daunting and inspiring-and it's the work not just of the Committee, but of our entire community of faith. It was in this spirit that we gathered this afternoon, and after brief presentations by the Committee's leaders, engaged in thoughtful, robust conversation about our questions, concerns, and excitement about the work we've done and the work still before us.

As we mourn the killing of Daunte Wright, a mere ten miles from where Derek Chauvin stands trail for the killing of George Floyd, this work of wrestling with our difficult history is more vital than ever. In telling the truth about our past, in answering the prophetic call to be "repairers of the breach," we do the work of justice so desperately needed for the healing of our society. Please mark your calendars for April 29 at 5:00 PM (register here), when we'll gather for the second of our conversations about King's Chapel's Memorial Project. And in the meantime, visit our website for more information and resources about the history that informs our work.

In faith and love,

David

Happening TONIGHT: Confronting Racial Injustice Series on Boston School Segregation, Virtual Talk Co-Sponsored by King's Chapel
In 1972, a group of African American parents sued city and state officials over segregation within the Boston Public Schools. After a trial, a federal court determined that the Boston School Committee had intentionally discriminated on the basis of race by operating a dual school system that extended to school assignments, facilities, and staffing. When officials failed to produce a timely remedy, the court ordered institutional reforms, including re-districting and the re-assignment of students. In this program, panelists will reflect on the lessons to be learned from Boston's school desegregation experience.

For more information and to register to attend, visit the Massachusetts Historical Society website here. King's Chapel is one of the co-sponsors of the Confronting Racial Injustice Series.
Virtual History Program for Patriot's Day on Thursday, April 22 at 5:30 PM

Patriot's Day - the third Monday each April - commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. The same week also holds the anniversary of James Freeman being installed as King's Chapel's permanent pastor in 1783, and James Freeman's 1759 birthday.

Join the History Program in commemorating all these dates in one virtual program on Thursday April 22 at 5:30 PM, which will explore the impact of the American Revolution on King's Chapel and the church's religious revolution in the 1780s. This program will dive deeper into the 1780s at King's Chapel, exploring the revolutionary changes that took place at King's Chapel under James Freeman's leadership during this decade, ranging from the creation of the King's Chapel Book of Common Prayer to Freeman's lay ordination.

Please register in advance here to attend next week's program.
25 Days of Walking, 25 Days of Matching, 25 Years of Work for Peace
This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Mother's Day Walk for Peace, where the Louis D. Brown Peace institute leads faith and community organizations across Boston in a walk to commemorate the lives lost to violence, and work to interrupt the cycles and systems of violence that afflict our city.

In commemoration, the Louis D. Brown Peace institute is providing  25 Days of Walking, a 25-day calendar of detailed activities leading up the virtual March for Peace on Mother's Day, May 9th.

Join our King's Chapel team  and walk with us, and help us reach our team goal of $10,000!  Join Carol Genovese and Amanda Picket this Friday (April 16th), in  submitting a photo of yourself coloring in the  Peace Institute logo , and watch this space for more activities to join!

Already walking for our team?  Tell us about it!  Consider writing a few lines about why you walk, and submitting them to Carol and Amanda.

To help the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute commemorate 25 years and meet its goal of $600,000, the CAC is MATCHING all donations up to $2000 dollars through May 7th.  Please consider donating in honor of a loved one, and asking family and friends to donate.  Then tune in to the virtual event May 9th, as the Peace Institute celebrates community and commemorates those lost.

From the Bench

We have a couple of new musical series planned for worship services in Eastertide. Organ voluntaries will come from a collection of chorale preludes by Gottfried August Homilius, a student of J.S. Bach and one of the transitional composers that bridge the gap between baroque and classical style, usually referred to as rococo or galant music. His pieces are based on often rather severe Lutheran chorales, but have a very sprightly quality, perfect for spring.

Choir member Jennifer Webb gave us a very handsome recent 2-volume collection entitled American Harmony, so the choir will offer some selections over the next few weeks. We begin with Clarimont, An Easter Hymn, by everybody's favorite colonial Boston composer, William Billings, directed by soprano Emily Bieber-Harris.

Internet Fraud - Protect Yourself

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, churches across the nation have seen a steep rise in incidents of internet fraud and scams, especially using ministers' names and targeting church members. Please watch out for these. I promise, we will never ask you to send us gift cards.  We will never ask for your personal identifying information or bank account info.  If we ever purport to say that we can't be reached by phone, be suspicious. Click the link below for more information on how to protect yourself and your family from internet crime.

Looking Back

Theology on Tap

On Wednesday we gathered to explore the lectionary reading from the Second Sunday of Easter and discuss how they're speaking to us in the present moment. We talked about how we're called to respond, and our conversation ran the gamut from questions of belief and doubt to the nature of God and the "peace that passeth all understanding"!

Last Sunday's Bell Ringing

Six parishioners gathered in the tower of King's Chapel this past Sunday  (April 11th) to ring our bell at 11am for eleven minutes, joining in solidarity with a global "eleventh hour" campaign to raise awareness about the urgent need to address our world's climate emergency. We so enjoyed being with one another in the presence of the commanding power of our bell.

Virtual Bistro 64 - King's Chapel Eastertide Cheese Tasting

Virtual Bistro 64 kicked off on Friday, April 9 with our Eastertide Cheese Tasting. Peter and Kiri Endicott of The Cheese Shop of Salem gave a presentation providing the methods of cheese making including the ranges of flavors, textures and forms from various regions and methods. Their presentation centered on 6 cheeses of various styles both from the USA and Europe. These cheeses were available to the participants before the tastings. 45 members and friends of the King's Chapel participated. During the presentation comments and questions were handled through Zoom text. The event was very successful garnering many positive comments both about the presentation and the wonderful selection of cheeses.

Planning is currently underway for the next Virtual Bistro 64 with a Mexican themed event sometime in May.
