Dear Neighbor,

In March, we celebrate Women's History Month and Social Worker Month. It is with great love and respect that I wish all the women happy Women's History Month! As women we do it all, we are mothers, healers, leaders, and peacemakers. This month, lets continue to empower our young girls by showing our strength!

¡Que viva la mujer!

During Social Worker Month we also want to highlight the importance of what they do to serve our communities. For those of you who may not know, I worked many years on the front lines as a social worker in our local community. I witnessed firsthand some of the troubling social trends and issues that can plague our San Jose families and communities. Thus, it is so important to also thank our social workers for all they do, and especially during this month we honor you!

As always, I want to encourage you to reach out to my office with any concerns or ideas that can help improve the lives of our residents. Together we can create a more powerful change than any one of us can alone, especially during difficult times and the ever-lasting pandemic. I am proud of the accomplishments that directly improve the lives of the residents of East San José and the entire city.

Sincerely,

Councilmember Carrasco - District 5

Happy Women's History Month!

We invite you to visit Alum Rock Park this month and explore the trails and geological features that the park has to offer. D5 Action Items!

Support for Eastridge Little League

Due to the findings of the Reid-Hillview County Lead Study, the Eastridge Little League kiddos are advised to no longer play at the location they've called home for 50 years. Under the leadership of County Supervisor Cindy Chavez, and in collaboration with the City of San José, we are hoping to secure County funding that would:

  • Upgrade the ball fields at Hillview, Capitol, and Welch Park
  • Ensure the smooth transition of the league into these parks.

I am proud to stand in support of this proposal since it will bring needed improvements to our East Side parks, activate them with amazing recreational programming, and ensure the longevity of the Eastridge Little League!

We would deeply appreciate your support in sending, an e-mail in support, and sharing these action items with your network! The County Board of Supervisors Meeting will meet Tuesday, March 8th.

California State officials announced after March 11th, masks will not be required but will be strongly recommended in schools and child care facilities. However, masks will still be required for everyone in high transmission settings like public transit, emergency shelters, health care settings, correctional facilities, homeless shelters and long-term care facilities.

I urge you to get vaccinated and boosted to protect yourselves and others!

You can schedule your appointment for a vaccine and a booster by visiting the state of California's MyTurn website by clicking HERE. Every home in the U.S. is eligible to order four free at-home COVID-19 tests for free, CLICK HERE to order.

Congratulations to the Cristo Rey San Jose Women's Basketball Team!

thumbnail_IMG_0168 2.jpg

This month, we would like to congratulate the Cristo Rey San Jose women's basketball team for making it to the Central Coast Section Division for women's basketball (CCS)! For the first time ever, they achieved a CCS win and proceeded to the Quarterfinals with a score of 37-18. Unfortunately, they did not proceed to playoffs, but qualifying for CCS Quarterfinals — is a win in their book. Kim Flores, who is a gem to the team, is one of them. She is #32 on the court and feels very excited about the team's victory! Kim is only a sophomore at Cristo Rey, so expect to hear more about her in her future basketball seasons.

Congratulations to Galaxy Guardado and the Overfelt Rubgy Team!

Capture.PNG

Galaxy Guardado is a current Eastside resident who attends Overfelt High School. The Overfelt rugby team is the first high school women's team in San Jose. They had many difficulties such as limited field space and hardly any equipment. They worked hard to win that championship. Especially since they had so much interference with the district and the school for two years because they weren't allowed to have the club in Overfelt. However, even though they didn't have the support, they had heart and their goal was to win that trophy and take it home, and they did! Congrats Overfelt High School home to the 2022 Women's rugby champions!
