December 2023

Hello, fellow Southeast Region Members:

What a year we've had in the Southeast Region! We have so much to celebrate and so many people to thank for ensuring the success of our association.

Our 2023 Fall Convention in Savannah (Nov. 8-11) was a huge success! We had more than 400 attendees, a sold-out vendor hall, and amazing sponsors. Southern hospitality was on full display at the beautiful Westin Savannah Harbor and Resort. I loved seeing long-time friends and colleagues, but was also excited to meet so many new faces! Check out the re-cap of the meeting below.

Our membership has grown by leaps and bounds! As of today, we have 296 members for 2023. If you haven't joined ISRI yet, help us meet the milestone of at least 300 members for 2023 - Join today!

We elected new board members during our general membership meeting in Savannah (see the picture below). In addition to welcoming our new board members, we'd like to thank our outgoing board members for their dedication to the SE Region:

Christian Fisher, CMC

Carter Bova, Trademark

Rob Rutherford, Recycle Alabama

Karen Rice, CFC

Matt Haenszel, Ecovery

Michael Derer (Rollover for partial term)

Without their hard work, we would not be growing into the organization we are today!

As we wind down 2023 and gear up for a busy 2024, I'm reminded that we have lots of room to grow and things to accomplish. I invite you to get involved with our association as well as your state association so we can grow the voice of our industry.

I'm looking forward to a great 2024, and hope to see you in person soon! Happy Holidays to you and yours.

2023 Savannah Fall Convention Recap

Our Fall Convention (November 8-11 in Savannah, GA) was a huge success! More than 400 people attended and enjoyed fine, Southern hospitality and beautiful weather on the banks of the Savannah River.

Our sold-out vendor hall was the perfect setting for our opening reception, featuring local cuisine, libations and lots of laughs as we caught up with old friends and met new ones.

On Thursday, we held our annual business meeting and elected new officers, followed by another delicious meal and open bar for lunch. Our Women in Recycling and Young Executives enjoyed some networking and social time prior to our Low Country Boil on the lawn of the beautiful Westin Savannah Harbor. The perfect weather gave us the chance to enjoy dancing to some Southern rock and marveling at the massive container ships on the Savannah River. Some of us even caught a glimpse of a Space X rocket launch in nearby Florida!

We enjoyed lots of social and networking time on Friday. About 50 golfers slugged it out on the beautiful Westin course while another 50 or so took part in inshore and offshore fishing. We are happy to report that all returned safely. Which is just as well, because we had one more event to attend - an excursion to a dueling piano bar on River Street in Savannah. More than one reference was made to the (at least somewhat) friendly rivalry between the Southeast and Gulf Coast Regions.

For those that have been attending and volunteering in the Southeast Region for a while, it was particularly rewarding to see the turnout and involvement of new faces. ISRI Southeast legend and past-President Barry Wolff had this to say: "The willingness of folks to participate on our Board is the most heartwarming thing to me. Having thirteen people running for six board seats is the validation of all the work that has gone in to building the best Region of ISRI."

ISRI SE BOARD SETS PLANS FOR 2024

By: Thomas Bennett, ISRI SE Secretary

As we bring the year to a happy close this holiday season it’s the perfect time to reflect on the success we have had and the excitement that is to come. Region leadership put in a lot of work this year to give membership the best region in ISRI. We shared laughs in Williamsburg, partied it down on the Savannah, hosted national guests at both events, and not to mention, grew our membership. All in all, it was a great year.

Surprise, surprise! We’re already receiving notices about Consumer Night and National Convention; it's amazing how fast things move! That’s why we want to take a moment to highlight the Southeast Region’s plans for 2024.

This spring, we will be “Flying-In” to Atlanta, May 22-24, at the Omni Hotel Battery Park. We are currently in the planning process and welcome any input or suggestions from our membership. Hope to see some new faces in the spring, it will be a great event!

Our Fall Convention will be November 19-24 in Charlotte, NC. We are still planning events and details but hope to incorporate regional attractions to make this event feel new and different. Of course, there will be a tradeshow, reception, etc. We are working on some new ideas and experiences that you won’t want to miss! Please stay tuned for details as we begin to line up the event.

Last, but not least, the Southeast Region has been asked to host BYAB (Best Young and Brightest)! We will be returning to one of our favorite southeastern cities: Mobile, AL - August 14-16. This event is open to any ISRI member forty and under. Rob Wise is chairing the planning committee and has asked for any volunteers to reach out to him about the planning process.

Our chapter leadership is looking forward to another great year, eclipsing 300 members, and creating great memories and experiences for all our members. To do this, we need input and participation from our membership. Volunteers are great and we wouldn’t be able to function without them, but at the end of the day, it’s buy-in and attendance that drive these events and this region. So, please mark your calendars and be there!

The planning committee is committed to improving events every year. We ask that our membership please keep this in mind and share any and all ideas or experiences you may have. Please email: Jonathan Carpenter (jsccenturion@gmail.com) Blake Cloninger wmblake@gmail.com or Thomas Bennett Tbennett@hightidemetals.com with your feedback.
