Discover both the hidden and larger-than-life gems in Groton and New London during CT Open House Day on the Thames.


Start in Groton Heights or Downtown New London or Fort Trumbull State Park for a fun-filled day filled with special events, festivals, demonstrations, and guided tours. Take the City of New London shuttle or the Groton Heights shuttle to tour the sights, then hop on the water taxi and explore across the river.


The special water taxi fare is $5 for all, children ages 3 and under are free. Tickets are available on the boats. Water taxis follow a continuous loop beginning at 11 AM and ending a 7 PM at Fort Trumbull State Park.

Groton Heights Neighborhood


Historic sites throughout the neighborhood are offering special activities and tours, a free shuttle bus, and free water taxi tours. Sites include Fort Griswold, Avery-Copp House, Bill Memorial Library, and Ebenezer Avery House. Book sale, family activities, and most sites dog friendly.

Avery-Coop House Museum


Take your own picture with our historic paper moon photo prop, along with old-fashioned games for children, scavenger hunt, and self-guided exploration of museum first floor and kitchen. Dog friendly grounds.

Ebenezer Avery House

Fort Griswold State Park


On September 6, 1781, the Ebenezer Avery House took in wounded soldiers from the Battle of Groton Heights. The House was moved to its present location on the grounds of Fort Griswold where it is a period museum of colonial history. On June 12, they will be offering house tours.

Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park


Friends of Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park guided tours: 11AM, 1PM, and 3PM. Museum, monument and gift shop open. "Abby Slocomb", designer of CT state flag visits at 12PM to share her story of life in Groton and travels abroad.

Bill Memorial Library


Bill Memorial Library is open from 10AM-3PM, with the Friends’ annual book sale running from 11AM – 2PM on the library lawn. The sale includes gently used DVDs and books for adults, teens and children.

Learn about the church’s more than 300 years of history and tour the sanctuary to see the beautiful stained glass windows. Open house from 10AM -3PM.

New London Cultural District


Tour historic sites and celebrate Juneteenth in SE CT's first cultural district. From the Amistad at City Pier and Juneteenth Festival at the Hempsted Houses, to exhibits at Lyman Allyn Art Museum and demonstrations of the Old Town Mill water wheel, there's much to do and see.

Nathan Hale School House

Parade Plaza


Visit the last school house in which Nathan Hale taught before volunteering to spy on the British on behalf of the colonists during the America Revolution. 11AM - 4PM

Juneteenth Festival

Hempsted Houses


Celebrate Juneteenth at CT Landmarks highlighting the African-American history of the Hempsted Houses and the surrounding New London neighborhood. The celebration will feature music, dance performances, and a dash of history, with activities and crafts for children. 11AM - 4PM

Waterfront Park


The Juneteenth celebration in the City of New London continues with a visit from the Amistad at City Pier. Board the ship and go back in time to 1839 to when the Mende captives from Sierra Leon revolted, took control of the ship, which was towed to New London harbor. Free tours: 2PM - 7PM

Lyman Allyn Art Museum


Permanent exhibitions: American Perspectives and Louis Comfort Tiffany in New London. Temporary shows: Memories & Inspiration - The Kerry and C. Betty Davis Collection of African American Art, and Forest Dreaming - Sculptures and Paintings by Ana Flores.

Old Town Mill


Originally built in 1650 by John Winthrop Jr., the founder of New London and later the Governor of Connecticut, the Mill is one of the oldest industrial sites in Connecticut. Water wheel demonstrations and grist mill tours from 11AM - 2PM.

Fort Trumbull State Park


Get an interactive history lesson at the visitor's center, or just walk the Fort and its ramparts for a view of the Thames River, a visit to Fort Trumbull has something for everyone including a boardwalk and fishing pier. 9AM - 5PM.
