I met Maureen while I was in Saratoga producing a sustainable fashion event in 2015. She took an interest in me and invited me out for drinks to talk about potential projects we could work on together. I will never forget how passionate she was about collaboration and the need for creatives to get proper compensation.

We ended up working on a series of events for the Saratoga Arts Fest summer program over the course of 3 years. As a mother of three children, my boys have always been curious individuals. My middle son is autistic and mentally disabled. Finding family friendly places to take my children that were fun, engaging, and interactive… but also educational and inspiring… was absolutely a challenge with school aged kids and one with special needs.

When my three boys were younger, I was a single mother seeking out places where my creative and imaginative boys could be boys. I had to find adventures that my special needs son could go on, and places that would welcome him.

These same spaces welcomed my boys as they grew into teenagers, and these spaces still seemed curious enough for them to want to keep exploring...continued

THE CREATIVE ECONOMY JOURNAL is a collaboration between Moses Nagel, Senior Correspondent at Hudson Mohawk Magazine, (A project of the Sanctuary for Independent Media) and Corey Aldrich, Executive Director at ACE! The goal of the program is to highlight and amplify the interesting and unique voices participating in the creative economy of New York State's Capital Region.

INSIDE ACE! | CREATING A NEW PATH

As many of you have surmised, I have recently taken over the role of Executive Director at ACE! as Maureen transitioned into her new path. (Please refer to the recent interview that I did with her for this newsletter.) Maureen's contribution has been significant. I am honored to inherit a firm foundation from which to grab the baton and move forward into the future. Having been a large part of the 'boots on the ground' aspects of the organization, I am excited about the opportunity to continue the valuable function that ACE! plays - for all creative participants, creative / cultural institutions and specifically our freelance professionals.

The pandemic has shifted the way we gather, this has had an impact on our ability to meet up with the frequency that we were before. That said, as things continue to stabilize we are beginning to ramp up our in person meet ups. You may have been at or seen that we had our first event of the year in April at miSci with the 2022 Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit in downtown Schenectady. We have more exciting events coming up later this summer that you will definitely not want to miss. Keep your eyes on our social media feed for regular updates in addition to this monthly newsletter.

Moving forward we are working on freshening up our identity, building our content streams and reaching out to organizations and individuals to collaborate on real life projects. I am excited about the reception and enthusiasm that I have been getting from important project partners. The focus is on creating awareness and synergy, all the while telling the story of the valuable contribution the creative economy market segment has to offer the Capital Region from an economic and quality of life perspective.
