Los Rios Colleges Temporarily Moving to Online Instruction and Services
As we prepared to welcome you to a new semester, we had hoped to be resuming a much more normal schedule of on-campus activities, classes, and services. Unfortunately, we find ourselves again at the mercy of this tenacious pandemic, with the highly contagious COVID-19 Omicron variant surging throughout our region, state, and nation.

In response to skyrocketing case numbers throughout our region, we have decided to temporarily move most in-person classes, labs, and services online from the start of the semester until Monday, January 31 for all Los Rios colleges (American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake, and Sacramento City). Impossible to Convert Career Education programs that were held in-person during the last year will continue to be held in-person. Other classes such as traditional lecture classes, science labs, arts, and ESL classes will move online for this two-week period. Look for a communication from your instructor in your email or Canvas account for the status of your class and reach out to your instructor with any class-related questions.

While we are fortunate to know that our employees and students are vaccinated, the sheer volume of cases has led to concerns about serious breakthrough cases, rising hospitalization rates in our region, and the operational impacts of large-scale staff and student absences. By January 31, we expect to have significantly expanded testing capacity and many experts believe that we will see the Omicron surge begin to wane.

Our reopening website has been updated with specific information about which programs and services will remain in person, and will continue to be updated in the days and weeks ahead with any changes to this information.
Testing
The lack of widespread availability of COVID-19 testing remains a problem throughout our region and much of the state and nation. We strongly encourage everyone coming to campus to first get tested by using free Sacramento County resources, at-home COVID tests, or on-campus testing resources. On-campus testing centers were initially designed to only handle the capacity needed for testing those with approved medical or religious exceptions or special programs, like athletics. We are working with the vendor, Biocept, to expand capacity and expect to have substantially more tests available in the next several weeks.
Booster Shots
We continue to strongly encourage all students and employees who are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot to get it immediately, as boosters are proven to dramatically reduce the chances of contracting the Omicron variant and of becoming seriously ill if you do. In the next several weeks, we expect that our district will move to require booster shots for all eligible students and employees who are on campus as an extension of our existing vaccination policy (eligibility is based on which COVID-19 vaccine you received and the date of your final dose – learn more at the CDC website). While we do not yet know the date that a booster requirement would go into effect, if you are eligible and haven’t yet gotten your booster shot you should do so immediately. Existing approved medical and religious exemptions will apply to the updated vaccination requirement and do not need to be resubmitted.
Mask Guidance
Consistent with evolving recommendations from the public health community, we strongly recommend that all students and employees who are on-campus use surgical masks or higher-level respirator N95 or KN95 masks as opposed to cloth masks or any other face-covering providing less protection (read the California Department of Public Health’s latest guidance on masks and face coverings). Each college’s operations department already has an inventory of surgical masks available for those who need them and we are in the process of securing more.
Many public health experts are predicting that this wave of infections will subside as rapidly as it has surged, and we look forward to resuming more in-person classes and services very soon.

We hope that you all had a restful winter break with your family and loved ones, and wish you a safe and healthy spring semester.
Sincerely,

Brian King
