THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
J-School students make the most of College Game Day
In addition to leading off ESPN College Game Day on Saturday, The University Daily Kansan confetti tradition was featured in a segment on WDAF-TV (Fox 4). Students also met the ESPN College Game Day crew (first photo, from left: Laphonso Ellis, ESPN college basketball analyst; Taylor Shylanski, Kansan artist who created the Kentucky poster; Regan Godderz, Kansan advertising account executive; Chloe Fuleihan, Kansan co-business manager; and Rob Karwath, Kansan general manager/adviser and journalism faculty member). Students from The Playmakers met sports journalist Holly Rowe (second photo, from left: Mya Peterson, Rowe, Sydney Clark and Olivia Micek.)
RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski and Bremner Editing Center Coordinator Lisa McLendon were invited to give a presentation on the J-School core curriculum at the KU Student Learning Symposium on last week.

Assistant Professor Jeff Conlin’s co-authored chapter “The Role of Emotions in Environmental Communication” has been published in The Handbook of International Trends in Environmental Communication. The book is part of an ICA Handbook Series that was published by Routledge. In the chapter, Conlin and co-author Jessica Gall Myrick at Penn State University situate different emotional theoretical perspectives, relevant discrete emotions, and contextual considerations and future research directions with environmental communication.

Two J-School research studies were highlighted in a KU News story released today. Associate Professor Joseph Erba conducted a study examining the effects of a media literacy intervention on racial stereotypes. He found that when readers read a news story about sports, drugs or welfare — topics that disproportionately stereotype the Black community — those who took part in a media literacy intervention held fewer stereotypes than readers who did not. Another J-School study found that mass media research of the last decade-plus has depended on samples lacking diversity, which can call into question how much researchers truly know about mass media’s effects on the population. Associate Professor Joseph Erba, Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski, Brock Ternes of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and former KU graduate student, and Yuchen Liu and Tara Logan, former KU graduate students, wrote a study in which they conducted a census of 1,278 mass communication studies, all of those published in six high-impact communications journals from 2000 to 2014.

Presenters needed for KSPA conference next month
The Kansas Scholastic Press Association is seeking presenters for its 2022 Conference on Feb. 14 in the Kansas Union. It’s been two years since Kansas high school student journalists have gathered to share ideas, learn new skills and celebrate their incredible work. The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications has supported KSPA for decades by hosting events like these and providing experts to visit with students for 40 minutes and share a skill that will help them in their work. The most popular topics are:
  • Visual journalism: video, photography, graphic design
  • Writing: reporting, interviewing, research
  • Leadership: editing, team building, staff management
  • Sports: writing, jobs in sports
  • Software: Adobe products, Google tools, etc.
Please remember that these skills can be basic and intermediate. Please don’t feel that you need to revamp a presentation or invent something new. Please sign up by Feb. 1. Questions? Contact Eric Thomas, KSPA executive director and J-School lecturer.
