2021 Charitable Contributions Awarded
On April 6, Town Council approved the 2021 Charitable Contribution recommendations made by the Ways and Means Committee at the preliminary review on March 22. Funding was awarded to the following organizations:

First Bobcat Den of the Year
Town Biologists were thrilled to discover the year's first bobcat den on Monday, April 12 along Ocean Course Drive! Bobcat 550 had two 8-10 day old male kittens. The kittens were microchipped, so Town Biologists will be able to identify them again. More information on our bobcat research is available here.

Unfortunately, due to pruning activity in the area Monday afternoon, crews unintentionally disturbed the den. When Town Biologists inspected the site yesterday, only one kitten was in the den, and the mother was not present.

Town Biologists revisited the den site today, and no kittens were present. Biologists were able to locate the female bobcat using her VHF frequency approximately 50 yards to the west of the original den site. It is common for females to move their kittens after disturbance, so the mother has likely moved the kittens to a new den site.

The original den site was located on property preserved by the Kiawah Conservancy. The pruning activity was unauthorized and is being investigated. The Kiawah Conservancy will be releasing more information later today.
Bobcat Crossing
Please remember to use caution while driving as you may encounter wildlife crossing our roadways. On April 4, Bobcat 767 (a collared bobcat from the Town’s GPS research project) was killed by a car on Governor’s Drive. This bobcat was captured on January 28, 2021, near Indigo Park and weighed 13 lbs., 5 oz.

This is the fourth bobcat that has been killed by a vehicle in the last eight months. Please watch out for our furry friends while driving and share this information with your visitors.

As a part of the ongoing research about the threat of SGA poisoning to our bobcat population, the carcass will be submitted to a diagnostic laboratory for a complete necropsy.

Beach Leash Ordinance Seasonal Change
As a reminder, from March 16 - October 31, dogs must be on a leash at all times on the beach from the western Critical Habitat Area (near Beachwalker County Park) to the eastern boundary of the Beach Club. Electronic leashes are prohibited. View the pet restraint map here.

Dogs are never allowed in the dunes, and owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. Leash ordinances are enforced by Beach Patrol and Code Enforcement officers who are authorized to ticket offenders resulting in fines up to $465. To report non-compliance call or text Beach Patrol at 843-518-2880.

The next King Tide that could affect the island will occur April 26 - 29. King Tides are the highest seasonal tides that naturally occur each year. In some cases, they may barely even be noticed.
