COVID Spike Forces CASA to Postpone Saturday’s Movie Night Fundraiser
An uptick in local cases of COVID-19 have forced Lassen Family Services’ Court Appointed Special Advocates program to postpone Saturday’s ‘Movie Night Under the Stars.’

The movie, presented in partnership with the Justice Task Force of Community Church, will be rescheduled at a later date.

CASA’s mission is to provide specially selected and trained community volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in Lassen County’s juvenile dependency system.

Cal-FIRE Now Accepting Grant Applications for Forestry Business Development Projects
On Thursday Cal-FIRE announced the availability of up to $24 million in grants for projects that support the creation of a robust and diversified wood products market to help meet California’s
forest resilience goals.

Cal-FIRE’s Wood Products and Bioenergy Program, which seeks to maintain and enhance the forestry sector of California to promote healthy resilient forests throughout the state, is accepting applications for Business and Workforce Development projects on a continuous basis as dictated by funding availability.
Project proposals will be formally reviewed and awarded quarterly, with awards being issued the following quarter (applicants that apply by March 31st will be notified on or before June 30th).

Applicants must submit proposals by March 31st, 2022, to be considered for the first round of funded projects.

The Program supports a diverse set of business and workforce development projects that align with the goals of California’s 2021 Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan.

Up to $24 million is available for wood products and workforce development projects that fit the eligibility criteria and score competitively against the selection criteria. Additional funding up to
$4 million is available from the Wildfire Resilience Program for tree nursery operations. These funds were allocated as part of the 2021-2022 final budget package.

“This is the first grant solicitation targeted to business and workforce development in the forestry sector,” said Tim Robards, Staff Chief, Cal-FIRE. “Forest management capacity has been
identified as a key constraint in reaching the state’s annual goal for treating forests and this program was developed to address that need.”

Eligible businesses include facilities, operations, and professional services that support the restoration of healthy, resilient forests. Some grants are available specifically for nurseries to grow native California tree seedlings.

Entities eligible for workforce development project grants include universities, colleges, government and community organizations, and businesses that aim to increase workforce capacity in the fields of fuels treatment, logging, transportation, prescribed fire, manufacturing and other support services.

Lassen National Forest Reminds Visitors to Recreate Safely During MLK Weekend
With record-breaking snow accumulations, all visitors to California’s National Forests should plan ahead and ensure your vehicles are snow ready as road conditions may impact access heading into Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

Visitors are encouraged to follow the Recreate Responsibility mantra which encourages people to Plan Before You Go, the Leave No Trace principles, Plan and Prepare, and Make it Better.
Know Before You Go – Some areas are seasonally closed or have limited hours, and many places become dangerous with winter weather. Research your destination, weather, and road conditions prior to your trip.

Plan and Prepare – Know your limits and your gear. Pack extra layers, waterproof clothing, and safety equipment or beacons for the backcountry. Have a Plan B in case you can’t access your destination.

Build an Inclusive Outdoors – Everyone deserves to experience a winter wonderland. Be an active part of making the outdoors safe, accessible, and welcoming for all identities and abilities.

Respect Others – From mountain tops to shores to prairies, parking can be in short supply in the winter. Park only in safe and legal spaces. Learn to Ski Kind or Tread Lightly when skiing, riding, or traversing off-road.

Leave No Trace – Respect the land, water, wildlife, and Indigenous communities. Follow the Leave No Trace Winter Use Principles.

Make it Better – Keep our winter playgrounds clean. Pack out any human or pet waste. Consider your responsibility to take action to protect our climate–today’s snow is tomorrow’s water.

Check Conditions – Check the weather for your destination and understand the road conditions, chain control, and potential road closures of your route. Don’t get lured into taking alternative routes around closures as travel apps and related online map services have likely not been updated to reflect the current situation and you may get lost or stuck. Recommended resource: QuickMap (ca.gov)

Make Sure Your Vehicle is Prepared – check your tires’ tread and pressure; top off windshield fluid; and carry tire chains, an ice scraper, an extra blanket and provisions in your car in case you become stuck or stranded on the roadside.

Using GPS – When a road is closed don’t rely on your phone’s GPS to route you around the closure. If a main highway is closed then the secondary road will be in worse condition.

For people choosing to stay local, the USDA Forest Service invites everyone to participate in volunteerism on Monday, January 17th, in recognition and celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. For more information, visit: https://americorps.gov/newsroom/events/mlk-day.

Measles Epidemic Strikes School
January 14, 1941

With an epidemic of influenza, which closed practically every school in the county late last year, subsiding, a flurry of measles threatens to close a number of schools.

According to N. H. McCollom, principal of the Lassen Union High School in Susanville, 17 students were bedridden yesterday and will be out from two to three weeks. A couple of others were dismissed today.

Horner Edgcomb, principal of the elementary schools of Susanville, reported 30 cases of measles among students yesterday, with prospects of more before the flurry ends.
