Supporting Zach Tucker, 2016 Alumnus

Zach Tucker, a graduate of WA's class of 2016, recently got a new heart! We wanted to share this amazing story with you and let you know about an event we’re excited about and hope you will attend!
Zach was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and underwent a series of surgeries up until age 5. Until recently, he's had minimal issues with his heart. After graduating, he moved to Nacogdoches to study film production with a minor in business at Stephen F. Austin State University. Zach's college studies moved online in March 2020, like most students. Even though he was learning online and spending time with his family, he still enjoyed college life, even sharing an apartment with fellow WA alumnus Frank Titzler.
Several months ago, Zach developed a cough and fatigue, testing negative for COVID. He underwent several tests as it was evident something was wrong with his heart. However, no one expected for him to go into cardiac arrest on March 1 during what was supposed to be a routine procedure.
On March 24, he received a heart transplant. He's making progress in some areas and meeting challenges in others, but he's improving daily. Physical, occupational and speech therapists are helping him regain strength.
In honor of Zach, there will be a Blood Donation and Organ Donor Registration event on Saturday, May 15 from 10-3 at the Westlake Fire House on Davis Blvd. There are many ways that you can help! You can donate blood - even sign up ahead of time with Carter BloodCare. You can register as an organ donor with Donate Life Texas. Without organ donors, people just like Zach would not have a second chance at life. You can volunteer! Sign up to be a student volunteer the day of the event and earn service/CAS points.
Zach has always kept his goals top of mind. In 2019, he was selected for the Disney College Program and moved to Florida for four months. He has a new goal - to walk across the stage when he gets his diploma at his college commencement ceremony this May. His sister Savannah (WA alumna’17) brother Alex (’current WA senior), and parents, Susan and Chris, look forward to sharing this moment with him.
In his spare time, Zach enjoys video gaming, filmmaking and hanging out with friends. We look forward to seeing you at the Fire House in support of Zach and his family!

Did someone say 11-man football?
|
|
|
|
For the first time in our history, beginning in August, the Westlake Academy Blacksmiths will be making the move to 11-man football. The coaching staff is excited about the new opportunity for not only our football program but the school as well. For 2021 the team will play its games off campus - we invite everyone to continue to support the Blacksmiths in this new venture.
It's time to sign up if you are interested in playing! Any student (grades 8 - 11) interested in playing or learning more about our football program should complete this form. As we gather names of interested students, we will be in touch with you with more details.

Interested in running for the HOC Board?
|
The WAHOC board and committee nominations are now open for the 2021-2022 school year! We need parent volunteers to help with many of the roles on the WAHOC next year. Whether you like to be front and center or behind the scenes, we can use your help.
We welcome self nominations if you see a role you are interested in. You can also nominate another parent for a role, but the Election Oversight Committee will reach out to any nominees to confirm their willingness to serve. Please use this form to nominate. The nomination deadline is April 16 at noon.
Join us April 24 for a new parent meet-up!
Mark your calendars for this event to be held on campus. More details to come!

Mr. Dasgupta spoke to Mrs. Pulis's G4 class this week about the basics of economics and how to be financially responsible. Thank you - our students love to hear from our parents!

|
Even though these G4 students are in different WA houses, they still enjoy reading together!
