A Message From Our Principal
Dear TMS Families,

Throughout this week, our students have respected individual choices around wearing or not wearing masks. Our students continue to show us they are supportive and kind of each other. We should be very proud of them.

Next week during a science class, students will participate in ALICE active shooter response training. The number one goal of ALICE is to keep students and staff safe and away from harm. Active shooter and intruder drills can be distressing to students, staff, and families. We have given careful consideration to presenting the ALICE training in an age-appropriate way. While we hope that we never have to apply this training in our school, we would be remiss in our duties if we did not prepare our students and staff how to be as safe as possible. Here are some additional links with information about ALICE training.

On Thursday, March 31, our students will engage in our next inclusion and belonging lesson during an extended 1st period. The learning target for the lesson is that students will know that overlapping identities combine to make them who they are and that none of their group identities on their own fully defines them or any other person. In community circles, students will respond to an ice-breaker question, look at and reflect on data from the survey they took in February, and share about their identities. Community circles, a strategy for which staff have been trained, are a way to build positive classroom cultures and ensure all voices are heard.

Thank you for your partnership as we work together to help all our students be successful.

Have a wonderful weekend! Go Bears!

How to Help a Friend
How to Help a Friend Presentation
New Date! Tuesday, March 22

Our 6th, 7th and 8th graders will participate in a presentation on suicide prevention in their social studies class on Tuesday, March 22 . The presentation, “How to Help a Friend,” is a youth suicide prevention program that follows a peer-to-peer training model. Students learn how they can identify and help their peers/friends that may be experiencing hardship or struggling. High school students are engaged as peer trainers for the “How to Help a Friend” suicide prevention training. We find that younger students pay closer attention to the message when it is being delivered from an older student rather than an adult. The presentation is provided by the Empower Youth Network (www.empoweryouthnetwork.org). The program is based on the work of Washington State's Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP), established in 1999 to lead statewide effort to reduce youth suicide. For more information, please see the following link:

We understand this can be a sensitive topic, and if this is the case for your child, they may be excused for the duration of the lesson. Please contact the Tolt Counseling Center at (425) 844-4607 if you would like your child to opt out of the presentation. Below, we have included the contact for the Tolt counselors. Additionally, we’ve included some telephone numbers that can be helpful for people dealing with concerns surrounding suicide.
