Book Review

The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation

By Richard Rohr

On a recent Sunday I asked members of our Adult Class to describe “The Kingdom of God”. Among the six of us, there were six different, though related, answers. Perhaps, the best we can do is to say, “The Kingdom of God is like…”

“Metaphor is the only possible language…when we speak of God…and of the mystery of the Trinity”, Richard Rohr writes in The Divine Dance. Central to Rohr’s book is a paradigm shift: moving away from God as distant and separate from us to one in which God is relationship, God is love, God is community. Throughout, he provides many illustrations and perspectives of God and of the Trinity, citing both historical and theological references. And, of course, the Bible is replete with stories of God’s seeking relationships. “When Jesus is revealed to us Christians by calling himself the Son of the Father and yet one with the Father, he is giving clear primacy to relationship.” Even the Holy Spirit is likened to breath, being inseparable from the Spirit. “The work of the Holy Spirit: to keep you growing is to keep you vulnerable to life and love itself.” And about the Trinity: “In the naming of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is its affirmation that there is an intrinsic plurality to goodness. Goodness, to be goodness, needs contrast and tension, not perfect uniformity.”

The Divine Dance, with its many theological and historical references, is quite ‘weighty’. To fully appreciate all it offers you may need to read it more than once. Father Richard Rohr is a Franciscan Friar, teacher, and founder of The Center for Action and Contemplation, based in Albuquerque, NM. He visited CUMC in May 2017. Here’s a link to his message https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHwq_gda8fk
