Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
February 2022

February is Black History Month
African Americans have been a central part of Oakland throughout most of its history, contributing to its rise from mid-nineteenth century fledgling railroad town to the major West Coast port city, thriving tech hub, and trendy tourist attraction it is today. In 1869, thirteen years after its incorporation as a town, Oakland became the western terminus for the Transcontinental Railroad, a development that led to the steady arrival of African Americans.[1]
There was a second migration between 1940 and 1970 which brought Black thought, sports and cultural leaders including:
Our hospital has been an anchor institution in the heart of North Oakland.
In a book called "The Hospital Women Built for Children" published in 1967 by Lederer, Street & Zeus Co., our hospital’s black history was captured in these images of the little hero awards for children treated and the occasional visitor:

It is also the Year of the Tiger, according to the lunar calendar. The tiger symbolizes courage and bravery. We have all been brave this year. We have shown our resiliency.
Some of our BCH family are moving on to retirement. I want to publicly thank Mina Davenport for her years of service as the BCH Oakland librarian. With her help, we are making a transition plan that will streamline and improve services working with UCSF Library.
I would be remiss to not mention the pandemic. Stay tuned for exciting developments in the roll out of vaccines for children. Thank you all for your tremendous contribution during this poignant time in the history of health.
Let's see this through,
Kelley

Welcome Suresh Gunasekaran
President & CEO, UCSF Health
| |
Dear Colleagues,
As one of the country’s leading academic health systems, UCSF has made a commitment to Advancing Health Worldwide. Fulfilling this commitment requires that we tackle and solve today’s most challenging problems in biomedical science and healthcare.
Our clinical programs have grown – both within UCSF Health facilities and at affiliated sites throughout Northern California. In addition, we continue to improve our delivery of clinical care. However, we never want to lose our identity as an academic health system deeply committed to training the next generation of clinicians and supporting innovative research.
|
Despite the many challenges facing academic health systems nationwide, UCSF is as strong as ever and the clinical and academic excellence of our organization is a great source a pride. Our academic health system is a success in large part because we can recruit the best and brightest leadership, faculty, staff, and learners from around the world. They set standards for and provide the highest quality patient care, train the next generation of healthcare professionals, conduct cutting edge biomedical research, and guide health policy throughout the world. The recruitment of Suresh Gunasekaran to serve as the next president and chief executive officer to lead UCSF’s clinical enterprise is no exception.

UCSF Mid-Career Development Program for Research Faculty - Deadline February 7th
Dear colleagues:
We are pleased to announce the second call for applications for the UCSF Mid-Career Development Program for Research Faculty. This unique program is intended to promote workforce equity at UCSF.
Given the lack of women and underrepresented minority (URM) faculty who focus on research and are at Associate or Full rank at UCSF and nationally, the main goal of this program is to provide career mentorship and sponsorship to research faculty who are women or historically marginalized.
During this review cycle, we will select up to three faculty members for this two-year award. Selection criteria, application components and timeline, and program components are outlined below. All candidates who meet these criteria are encouraged to apply. We strongly encourage URM women research faculty to apply.
Please email Claudine Catledge (claudine.catledge@ucsf.edu) with any questions or for more details.
Sincerely,
Talmadge E. King, Jr., MD

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION, and
ANTI-RACISM at UCSF BCH

From Marsha J. Treadwell, PhD
DEI Co-Chair BCH Oakland
Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, UCSF School of Medicine
Jordan Fund Endowed Chair, Department of Hematology/Oncology

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.
