Ask A Native Triton

Each month, we like to profile one of our amazing Native American students at UC San Diego. If you would like to nominate a Native American student at UC San Diego for us to feature, you can email us at itrc@ucsd.edu.

The ITRC is proud to introduce...

1. What advice do you have for incoming students?

Three things: set up routines, join a club, and explore the city. Setting up a routine was the hardest thing for me to do since the quarter moves so fast, but it helps me keep track of my consistency and definitely establishes my motivation for the day. Joining orgs and exploring the city helped me find new ways to deviate from my routine by providing me opportunity to push myself, and it also helped me feel closer in the sense of community.

2. What is your favorite thing about UC San Diego?

I really like how big the campus is. There's a sense of inconvenience when it comes to needing to get around, but I have really come to value the walks that I take between classes or meetings. It allows me to hear the sounds of the people and the university, and taking more notice of my mental wellbeing.

3. What do you like to do in your free time?

I absolutely love to crochet and laze about on a nice lounge chair covered by shade. I also love listening to live music, thrifting, meditation, and editing videos I take on my camcorder.

What We've Been Up To

On Friday, September 1st, 2023, the ITRC hosted its annual Native Tritons at the Game night. Students, staff, and faculty met at Petco Park to attend the annual Native American Heritage Night Padres Game.

This year, the ITRC hosted a tailgate before the game where everyone ate pizza, chatted, and got to know one another until game time. It was a was a wonderful opportunity to meet incoming Native American undergraduates and reconnect with continuing students, faculty, staff, and alumni prior to watching the Padres win!

The ITRC hosted it's orientation programs on September 14th and 15th as part of the Black, Latinx, and Native American Family Orientation.

On Thursday, September 14th, the ITRC invited incoming Native American undergraduate students to learn more about the Native community on-and-off campus through a Native American Orientation. This Orientation included a warm welcome from Assistant Vice Chancellor of EDI Karen Biestman, an introduction to ITRC programming by our staff, an introduction to the Native American/Indigenous Studies Minor by Dr. Andrew Jolivette, a short history of the land UCSD resides upon by Native alumni Juan Reynoso, and Kumeyaay storytelling by Dr. Stan Rodriguez. Incoming students were able to learn more about Native campus life through the Native Student Life Panel hosted by current and past undergraduate and graduate students. They were also able to learn how to get involved in the urban Native community in the greater San Diego area through Karin Giron DeCrane and Richard DeCrane. The Orientation finished with a "Native Tour" walking around UCSD.

On Friday, September 15th, both current and new undergraduate students were invited to bring their families and join the ITRC at La Jolla Shores Beach to celebrate the end of summer and enjoy the beautiful weather and waves.
