Week 3: Black Changemakers Series

During Week 3 of Black History Month, our Amana learning community will dive into the lives of artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kehinde Wiley.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was an influential Haitian Puerto Rican artist who rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth. After quickly rising to fame, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death. In 2017, Basquiat's art work Untitled (1982) was bought for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work.

Kehinde Wiley is a painter best known for his naturalistic portraits of African American men in heroic poses. Born in Los Angeles, Wiley’s early work consists of paintings of men he had met on the streets in Harlem, set against a floral background. In all of his work, Wiley combines a wide range of references from classical painting and pop culture, and draws inspiration from French Rococo painting, Islamic architecture, African textile design, contemporary fashion, and urban hip hop. He has continued to travel through Africa, Brazil, India, and Sri Lanka, and paint portraits that incorporate the cultural imagery associated with these places.
Spring 2021: Request to F2F Switch

Please fill out the below form if your family would like to request your student(s) make the switch from Remote Learning at home to Face-to-Face Learning in the school building. This is ONLY for students who are currently REMOTE.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • Due to limited seats, we will have a LOTTERY to select which students will switch to Face-to-Face Learning in March. Our team will also be evaluating which students require special needs/services- these students will receive priority.
  • Honoring your request for each child will also be DEPENDENT on the availability of space in your child's classroom. To ensure that we are keeping our students and staff safe, each classroom has a maximum capacity of students. If you have filled this form out, but there is no space left in your child's classroom, your student will continue virtually until the end of Spring 2021 Semester in May.

PTO Shoe Drive: Donate Your Used Shoes!

Amana PTO is working with a local non-profit to be of service by asking that our community support H.E.A.L (Help Educate Assist Lives) by donating gently used shoes (all sizes, colors, styles, adults, and children).

H.E.A.L (https://heal-lives.org/) focuses on providing basic needs and educational resources for orphans and underprivileged youth in the communities we serve, with the purpose of creating a better living and learning environment. The organization provides services, funds, and material goods to communities in Liberia.

We are pleased to partner with them and extend our #WeAreCrew spirit outside of our walls and into the world.

Please drop your shoes in the bins that will be available in front of the PTO offices from Tuesday, January 19th - February 28th.

Thanks as always for your partnership in making Amana principles a part of the world's norms!
