Because of my service-learning experience at Natividad Pagan International Newcomers Academy (INA), I am able to effectively work with English Language-Learning (ELL) students. I have become passionate about educational equity for ELL students because of my work and relationships with the students at INA.
My values surrounding education have changed. Coming into this experience I learned about the struggles ELL students face through my service learning class. However, working one-on-one with ELL students has made me want to advocate for more accommodations for ELL students in higher education.
Throughout my service learning placement for EN 390, I learned how to effectively tutor ELL students. As a future writing center consultant, I will apply this learning to my consulting so that I can be more aware and better support students who seek my help.

Cosmic Bobbins is a social enterprise that exists not only to provide services such as screen-printing and embroidery but to promote a circular economy in Cleveland. As opposed to our current societal standards of "take-make-waste" where goods are often disposed of prematurely in favor of something newer, a circular economy promotes upcycling by recycling, reusing, and remanufacturing goods that will otherwise end up as waste in landfills. Additionally, Cosmic Bobbins utilizes a community garden in order to promote "regeneration" through utilizing compost, teaching others how to garden, and beautifying the neighborhood.
From growing up in a somewhat rural area, I took for granted the impact a healthy environment can have on the lives of individuals. While I saw gardening as burdensome because it was a chore in my household, senior citizens in the St.Clair-Superior neighborhood gain real enrichment from working in Cosmic Bobbins' community garden. While I am able to get fresh produce on a regular basis, much of the Cleveland community lives in a food desert. While I believe that having big events like the NFL Draft and NBA All-Star game brought a lot of good to Cleveland, I did not consider the production of hundreds of pounds of non-recyclable waste which ends up in landfills as a result.
Through this service, I have learned how much of an impact one person can have on their environment and community through small actions and passion. A garden can provide a neighborhood with fresh food and a place to engage with nature in an urbanized setting. Sharie, through her remanufacturing work, is keeping hundreds of pounds of non-recyclable banners out of landfills by working to repurpose them for greater usage opportunities. One person's fleece donation allows Cosmic Bobbins to create 50-100 blankets for recently relocated refugee families. While one person may feel small in the grand scheme of things, through hard work and passion they can bring something beautiful and life-changing to the community and world.
