Supporting Employees with Disabilities Who Use Assistive Technology in the Enterprise

March 2, 2022 – 1:30PM – 2:30PM

Various disability legislation exists to ensure employees with disabilities (EWD) have equal access to perform core job functions, from the hiring process to the use of all internal systems and communication within an enterprise, which include requests for accommodation, training and Helpdesk support. While there have been great advances in Assistive Technology (AT) for persons with disabilities providing greater access to IT systems and electronic documents, providing seamless support to the employee with a disability to ensure equal access, can be daunting for enterprises. Ensuring equal access requires extensive planning, support, and continual monitoring. Based on its decades-long experience working in enterprise environments with EWD, management and Helpdesk support, iYellow Access is presenting a series of webinars to help enterprises understand the expertise and processes needed to fully support their employees with disabilities.

In this webinar, iYellow Access' Director of Training, Jeff Ermold and Harris Rosensweig, Director of Accessibility will address best practices in supporting employees with existing disabilities and those who obtain disabilities while on the job who need or use AT.

The following topics will be discussed:
  • Overview of legislation applying to public and private enterprises concerning employees with disabilities. A high-level overview of the ADA and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation act will be provided and what specific provisions apply.
  • Key processes, teams and expertise needed to properly assess employees with disabilities' needs around AT and training.
  • What skill sets an AT Specialist should possess to assist your organization.
  • Best practices around implementing successful AT training (in person or remote).

Autism Acceptance Month: Perspectives on Neurodiversity and DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility)

April 5, 2022 12:00 - 1:00 PM ET

In honor of World Autism Month in April, Disability:IN DC Metro and K&L Gates are hosting a webinar discussion among leaders in the neurodiversity and autism at work fields. As part of the focus on autism acceptance and awareness, panelists will discuss common misconceptions about autism and neurodiversity, along with constructive approaches to providing accommodations and support. More generally, panelists will discuss DEIA programming and the importance of including disability as a focus so that individuals with disabilities feel included in the workplace and in the DEIA program itself.

Finally, they will discuss a number of best practices including Disability ERGs, Centralized Accommodation Systems, Fully Accessible Websites and Workspaces, among other topics.

Zoom Breakout Room Feature Is About to Get a Lot Smarter
Zoom's Breakout Room Feature Is About to Get a Lot Smarter

By Kevin J. Ryan, Staff Writer, Inc.

Thanks to an acquisition in the remote workspace, Zoom's breakout rooms will soon use algorithms to match employees.

If one startup has its way, the spontaneous watercooler conversation will soon have a place in the world of remote work.

Twine, a startup that builds digital networking tools, recently acquired Glimpse, a San Francisco-based remote work startup. That will enable Twine to offer Glimpse's "speed matching" tool, which uses algorithms to strategically place participants into breakout conversations during virtual events and meetings. The technology will soon be available as a free add-on to Zoom.

Twine co-founder and CEO Lawrence Coburn believes the platform, called Twine for Zoom, will help companies re-create the natural conversations that happen around the office. "Our thesis is that remote work is here to stay," he says. "But the problem with remote work is that everybody is working in a silo. We believe there's something valuable and important about people knowing others at their company--what they're working on, but also something about them personally."

Twine for Zoom will offer companies tools for strategically creating social breakouts at all-hands meetings, company socials, onboarding events, and other virtual gatherings. In one mode, organizers can tag employees according to their roles or departments, or sort them into categories like mentors/mentees or executives/new hires. Twine's algorithm then creates breakout rooms of the chosen size.

How Blended, Braided or Sequenced Funding can Help Drive Employment, Equity and Inclusion

Tuesday, March 22, 2022, 3:00 - 4:30 pm (ET)

Demand for workplace talent is high. Remote work opportunities may be with us to stay. These conditions offer new opportunities for expanded access to workforce activities for people with disabilities.
To ensure that workforce programs are ready to meet this demand and can support jobseekers and career changers equitably, programs often need to draw on a range of different funding sources. The ability to blend, sequence, or braid funding with other resources becomes an essential ingredient to support employment, equity, and inclusion. Yet, each source of funding usually comes with specific goals, target populations, and performance indicators.

In this federal interagency webinar hosted by the LEAD Center, state practitioners across the workforce system will discuss how they successfully applied innovative, collaborative resource sharing that benefits both businesses and jobseekers with disabilities.
