NOTE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
World Class Schools for Our Students:
Transitioning Student Leadership
Patrick Foster
2020 School Board
Student Representative
Kennedy Burch
2021 School Board
Student Representative
The start of the second semester brings a transition in student leadership on the NCSD Board of Directors. The Board thanked 2020 Student School Board Representative Patrick Foster for his year of service at the January 11 Board meeting and welcomed 2021 Student School Board Representative Kennedy Burch. Kennedy is the third student to serve in this role and continues a new and strong tradition of student leadership on the NCSD Board of Directors.

I have the pleasure, along with 489 NCSD staff members, to work with outstanding students and student leaders, like Patrick and Kennedy, on a daily basis. Patrick and Kennedy both provide me with a sense of optimism and hope for the future. Patrick has been a key contributor to Board discussions during an extraordinary year filled with challenging decisions and Kennedy’s willingness to serve during these difficult times is an excellent example of the NCSD Mission Statement: Growing Learners and Leaders

Thank you Patrick and Kennedy for your leadership and thank you Patrick for picking the theme for our district this year - ONE - One Family. One District. One Community! Kennedy, I look forward to the 2021-2022 school year theme you will set for our district.

Yours in service,
D.T. Magee

Norwalk Schools Response to Challenges
Earns Recognition from Area Chamber
The innovative, flexible and often courageous response of the Norwalk Community School District to the massive challenges of the Covid 19 pandemic has earned the District the 2020 Pivot Award of the Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Pivot Award, created by the Chamber as a special one-time only recognition of a local organization’s courage and leadership amid the pandemic year, was presented at the Chamber’s 28th annual Awards Banquet, attended virtually by more than 125 community leaders on January 22.

District Superintendent DT Magee said, "the award honors the achievements of the district’s 3,299 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in six buildings, its 235 classroom educators, 254 support staff members encompassing administrators, counselors, nurses, custodial teams, transportation drivers and the NCSD Board of Directors." And, he adds, “The parents who supported their children and the district’s decisions and activities have been critical to our achieving a successful school year which began in March 2020 and is continuing daily during the months of 2021.”

NHS STUDENT ART CLASS
NHS Art Department Adapts to Pandemic School Year
The art department has adapted to the pandemic school year by providing each student with their own set of supplies. The supply kits were assembled for in-person and remote students for drawing, painting and pottery classes. Students were ready to pivot to hybrid or remote learning if it required.

Students gain experience in drawing and painting in the Drawing 1, Painting and Advanced Drawing classes. Below: Lyndsey Torgerson, Milan Hale, Alex Tyner, Painting Class
Advanced art students can work independently on their own area of concentration in Advanced Placement (AP) Art. These students receive AP Credit when submitting a portfolio of artwork to the College Board.

The High School Art Department offers four concurrent classes in which students can receive DMACC credit and High School credit. Painting, Drawing, Art Appreciation and Pottery II are the concurrent classes that are offered. These new offerings have benefited both the students and the Art Department. We have seen a healthy increase in students in the art room which is very exciting!
