Because of my service-learning experience, I am able to discover and acknowledge things that I have in common with people who I may have thought were very different from me. I have had the opportunity to form relationships with individuals whose lives look different from my own on the outside and found that we have similar goals, values, and interests.

Past experiences and connections have had a major impact on how I view situations. Through participating in service growing up and continuing at John Carroll, I have met many amazing people that have taught me how important it is to be present and in the moment while doing service. It is an opportunity to not focus on everything else going on in your life, and instead form connections with people and help the community around you. With this mindset, I am able to be more helpful to the community partners as well as enjoy my time doing service.

My experience has taught me how service can bring a community together. It gives people the opportunity to get involved while meeting new people and experiencing new things. I can use this knowledge to grow the future communities I am a part of and share the power of doing service with others.
