Epiphany
Epiphany begins on January 6 each year. It gets its name from the Greek word epiphaneia, meaning "to appear, to show or to manifest." The ending date of the Epiphany season is determined by Ash Wednesday, which is determined by the date of Easter.

Traditionally, Epiphany marks the coming of the Magi to worship the infant Jesus. The significance of Epiphany for Christians is that it symbolizes the first recognition of Christ by non-Jews.

The season of Epiphany emphasizes the divine nature of Jesus -- a truth that justifies his perfection as the model of real life. The color of Epiphany is green to symbolize life, growth, hope and eternity, which are all characteristics of the Epiphany emphasis.

Bible Story
This week's story is about how Simeon and Anna waited a long time before finally seeing Jesus. I wonder . . . how do you like to praise God when good things happen? I hope you enjoy the story and video and take time to think about the reflection questions.

Thank you for continuing to support this special ministry for my husband and myself. Remember yo are all Beloved Children of God! Hallie

What is Centering Prayer?

“Think of God in a very big way. And if you do that’s too small! You can’t think of anything more wonderful than this God. And you can’t figure out anything about God without a special grace…”

Friends, God is so eager to connect with us!
It is said that different practices of prayer provide a place of intersection between tradition and transformation, drawing us into relationship with persons throughout Christian history. While that relationship is continuing to grow, you need to practice what Jesus taught us. The 3 simple guidelines for centering prayer are:
1.    to sit still;
2.    to breathe;
3.    to focus on a single word
The goal of centering prayer is to make a space and time to just be with God. During this time, there are no petitions of thanks, or asking, or saying I’m sorry. The idea behind the practice of centering prayer is that the more we spend time with God, the more we begin to trust God. Centering prayer is just one way of many to pray.

Beginning on January 18 at 10:00am, we will be gathering every week for a time of centering prayer and meditation. This time is meant for you to help strengthen your relationship with God and maybe practice a bit of self care. After all, we aren’t able to successfully serve others if we do not first take care of ourselves.

We will be gathering on-site in the Parlor and over Zoom. No need to RSVP, just drop in. The standing Zoom link will be sent out via eblast.

I have participated in a weekly Centering Prayer Gathering over Zoom with a church in North Carolina, and I wanted to offer that experience with the folks at Woodhaven.
I hope you will join me either on-site or over Zoom on January 18!
Hallie
Mission

Cobbie Palm has sent us a letter & update report (late last week) on the local impact of Typhoon Rai on his island -- from Silliman University News. We have added the graphics.
December 30, 2021
Dear Pastor Shane and Stephen:

The holiday season has come, and greetings of the seasons joy have been difficult to compose and send off this year because we have been immersed in the disaster response to Typhoon Odette (international name Rai) - picture below.
I am sending this special greeting to you because you have stood by the work of Silliman Water Ministry and supported us on your continuing journey.  The update on the attached document (copied and shown below) would not be possible without your compassion for the work that we do. Because of your support and prayers we are able to give life through clean drinking water in this difficult time.

I pray that you and our friends at Woodhaven Presbyterian Church have had a joyous Christmas and we all hope for a meaningful New Year.
Blessings always from "your hands" in the Philippines,
Cobbie and Dessa

SILLIMAN WATER MINISTRY *
The Mission of Water in a Time of Crisis.
Picture of Silliman University is below in Dumaguete.
With the onslaught of Typhoon Odette (Rai) over the weekend of December 18, the northern part of the island of Negros Oriental, Philippines, where Dumaguete is located was seriously affected with heavy floods, landslides, strong winds and rains. It has left 22 missing, 99 injured, 478 evacuated families, 11,878 individuals displaced, and 74 dead.
(Source: Negros Oriental PRRMC as of December 22, 2021).

Amid the celebration of Advent and the joyous mood of the Christmas season, suddenly the people of Negros Oriental were struck with a disaster and are experiencing gloomy nights with the absence of electricity in the communities. Many of these communities have lost power which has caused the shutdown of the drinking water supply in these towns. The communities in greatest need are the string of 9 towns lining the coastline north of Dumaguete City -- see map below.
Various individuals from the churches and the Silliman University academic community have requested for help on behalf of the typhoon-stricken communities for clean drinking water. Silliman Water Ministry has responded by sharing many bottles of clean drinking water and more importantly setting up a portable solar-powered water purifier in the cities of Bais and Mabinay, and for evacuees in a shelter set up in Tayasan Central School. Picture below of Cobbie and Ministry team with solar water purifier.
Congregational Creation Care

In January Woodhaven will be offering a Earth care class called Congregational Creation Care.  Our presenter will be Kelly Longfellow Ph.D. Candidate, Erasmus University, and Green Faith Fellow. She is our personal green team guide as we have been making the transition to a certified Earth Care Congregation. The class will begin January 9th, directly after worship, and conclude just before Lent. It will include multiple idea about how to blend Lent practices with Earth Care in the home. Kelly is passionate about her faith and is a wealth of knowledge and ideas for caring for the Earth. We look for ward to learning more with you.

Heather Meese and the Green Team
Good morning,

This remarkable year is coming to a close and we could not have gotten here without your faithful support.

With your help, we were able to hold summer conferences for youth once again like Youth Celebration and Junior High Jubilee. And longtime conferences like the Men’s and Women’s Conferences occurred in May. At every conference we heard the same phrase: “we are so happy to be together here at Mo.”
Your gifts mean that our conferences and programs can continue to bring people together safely for a transformative experience at Mo-Ranch in the new year.

Gratefully,
Allison Harris Graves
