GRATITUDE

by Jo Strausz Rosen

At Jewish Senior Life, as we anticipate Yom Kippur, The Jewish Day of Atonement, memories of our parents and our children intermingle. From an early age, we teach our children to wake up saying, modeh ani lefanecha, I am grateful to you, G-d, for the fact that I woke up, that I am alive to see another day, for the wonderful blessings in my life and for my relationship with You. Since my childhood I was taught that we should wake up with a deep and profound sense of gratitude, appreciation, and thanks for our lives. How we begin our day has an enormous impact on how our day will unfold. This coming Yom Kippur is a day characterized by forgiveness. But we must not forget to be grateful.

FRIENDS

A recent edition of the Jewish News contained a piece by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, titled “A Nation of Storytellers.” He quotes Harvard professor Howard Garner, “Gardner’s argument is that what makes a leader is the ability to tell a particular kind of story – one that explains ourselves to ourselves and gives power and resonance to a collective vision.” He gives the examples of Churchill telling the story of Britain’s indomitable courage and Gandhi speaking of the dignity of India and non-violent protest.

Don’t Write Me Off

At JSL, we are keenly aware of the power of storytelling and are excited to present an evening of storytelling by and about older adults. Our residents show the diversity of their personalities, experiences, abilities, perspectives and interests through their own stories in the book Don’t Write Me Off. We will celebrate the book’s release with an author meet and greet at the upcoming Lives Well Lived: Wrinkles in Time on November 14, at 7pm at The J (formerly the JCC).

Lives Well Lived

At Lives Well Lived: Wrinkles in Time, we will also enjoy a program of short documentaries that tell stories of older adults living life well, including Death Metal GrandmaWendy’s Shabbat, and the highlight will be a tribute to filmmaker Sue Marx and her Academy Award-winning documentary “Young at Heart." Young at Heart is the story of filmmaker Sue Marx’s father, artist Louis Gothelf, and his late in life romance with fellow artist Reva Shwayder. And the program will include a tribute to Marx by Jack Lessenberry.

The story we are telling through these projects and every day at JSL is that it’s not over ‘till it’s over and so many older adults at JSL and everywhere are still living life to its fullest.

Please join us. Sponsorship information and tickets are available at jslmi.org/jsls-lives-well-lived/.

Volunteers

Volunteers make our JSL village a place where residents thrive. Just seeing new or familiar faces and knowing that the community cares injects energy into our community and all the people who are part of it. Many of the activities in the residences on both our West Bloomfield and Oak Park campuses are run and sometimes created by volunteers. Please visit jslmi.org/volunteer/ to see a list of volunteer opportunities. Or call or email me at 248 592-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org.

TEACH ME

a poem for Yom Kippur

Deliver me from thinking

That I am always right.

Keep me from saying hurting things

To everyone in sight.

Don't let me for an instant think

I'm better than the rest

It's what is deep within my heart

And not how I am dressed.

It's how I live, not where I live

That matters in the end.

It isn't who I know or all

The places I have been.

It's showing and it's caring

And it's finding time to be

As tolerant of others

As they have been with me.

THERAPY THROUGH MUSIC

Music of the heart led by board-certified music therapist, Julie Bodson, brought joy and smiles to more than 15 residents of Coville Assisted Living Apartments in Oak Park. Participants joined in the session by accompanying Julie's therapeutic music with shakers, as she delighted on guitar and violin with a variety of songs from the past. Julie asked the residents what they like to listen to in the morning and then she incorporated their favorites into a specially personalized song.

Melody for Posterity - Remembering Our Loved Ones on Yom Kippur

As a form of eternal respect to my great-grandfather, I recently recorded a melody that my great-uncle Shlomo, of blessed memory taught me – a melody for posterity. Holocaust survivor, great uncle Shlomo used to join our Rosh Hashanah dinner celebrations. With great emotion, he would sing his father’s High Holiday melody prayer. Indeed, it is a moving and inspiring tune, especially as it was born amidst the ashes of World War II. Shlomo’s father, my great-grandfather, Reb Chaim Yechiel Rosenberg and his wife Rochel, prominent members of their Jewish community bore twelve children. Many of them reached great heights before their lives ended abruptly in the hands of the Nazis. My great uncle shared that as his father, Chaim Yechiel Rosenberg sang this tune during prayer services, his children stood at his side in choir and assisted him in the beautiful chanting.

I feel honored on the sacred day of Yom Kippur to preserve my great-grandfather’s memory – through his melody - thereby paying tribute to a great man whose life was sadly cut short.

As we approach the High Holidays of the Jewish year 5784, let us be encouraged and empowered to remember our loved ones, those without whose tenacity and bravery we would not be standing in prayer on this holy day.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
