Quarterly News & Updates
Unintentional injuries are the number one cause of death among children ages 19 and under in the United States. Each year one out of every four children needs medical attention for an accidental injury. Most of these unintentional injuries and deaths are preventable.

This newsletter is filled with resources and information to help keep your family safe this time of year.

Featured Car Seat
Britax Grow With You ClickTight
The Britax Grow With You ClickTight Plus harness-2-booster car seat grows with your child from toddler to big kid. The SafeWash cover is soft to the touch and safe to machine wash, with a knit construction that’s naturally flame retardant. Install confidently, every time. With ClickTight, you know it’s right in 3 easy steps: open, buckle, close. 3 layers of side impact protection surround the head, neck & torso. SafeCell Technology acts as a crumple zone to help absorb crash energy. Quickly adjust the 9-position harness & headrest using just one hand for the proper fit as your child grows. Once they’re ready to use the seat belt, the 5-point harness tucks away, transitioning to a belt-positioning booster. Color-coded guides help you and your child route the seat belt through the right paths. With arm rests, cup holders and harness comfort pads, even big kids enjoy the ride.

Forward facing: 25-65 pounds
Booster: 40-120 pounds

Britax strongly recommends that children should be secured with a harness system until they exceed the weight or height limits specified.

Car Seat Tech Corner

This article is designed for nationally certified child passenger safety technicians, also known as car seat techs. If you have an interest in learning more about car seats and would like to become a car seat tech, please contact Jasmine at jwangen@altru.org or 701.780.1660. Classes are held once per year in our Grand Forks coverage area.

Head slump is both the most evil thing people think it is and not at all a big deal. Confused? So are many other caregivers.

After that is drilled into us, it’s no wonder we have parents buying new car seats or rearranging everything to do away with head slump.

This is both a potentially fatal topic and not a big deal. Let’s break it down between two general age groups. Babies without head control and older babies with head control.

Pedestrian and Wheeled Sports
Thanks for helping make Bike to School Day a success!

We had over 250 students ride their bikes to school!

We had volunteers from Polk County Public Health, PTOs, school staff and parent volunteers.

We are super grateful to Kaitlin from Vision Zero ND for helping to coordinate at a few schools that week. We couldn’t do what we do without our amazing volunteers.

Grand Forks - East Grand Forks
Bicycle & Pedestrian Element Open House
June 15, 5:00-7:30PM
East Grand Forks City Hall Rotunda
600 Demers Ave
East Grand Forks, MN 56721

The Grand Forks-East Grand Forks Metropolitan Planning Organization invites you to attend an Open House to learn more about and provide feedback on our update to the regional Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan. This Plan is a key element of the metropolitan transportation plan, and will guide investment for infrastructure and programs to support biking and walking for the next decade and beyond. We need your input to help us understand how you get around, what works and doesn’t work for bicyclists and pedestrians, and what you think priorities should be moving forward.

For more information about this project and other ways to get involved and provide feedback, visit http://www.theforks-bikepedplan.com.
Spring 2022 Safety on Wheels & Bike Rodeos
Safe Kids Grand Forks conducted their Safety on Wheels training on head injury prevention to 23 regional and private schools this spring. We presented to over 700 3rd grade students on the importance of wearing a helmet whenever they have wheels under their feet. We distributed over 250 helmets between all 23 schools. We had some great volunteers to help us along the way: Donna Holand from Walsh County Public Health, Emily Koenig from 1st Care in Park River and Carly Endres from the ND Brain Injury Network! We also want to thank our sponsor of all things bike safety, The Grand Forks Park District.

The Optimist Club also was able to do some Bike Rodeo Skills Course events at a few select schools this Spring! We are so grateful for our partnership with the GF Optimist Club to help promote bike safety skills to these 3rd graders.

Home Safety
Safe Disposal of Medication
Properly disposing medications can help prevent accidental misuse, poisonings, and overdose of medications. A great way to safely dispose medication is to drop it off at a drug take back site near you. These are located at every pharmacy as well as the Grand Forks Downtown Law Enforcement Center (122 N. 5th St.), the East Grand Forks Police Station (520 Demers Ave.) and the UND Police Department (3851 Campus Rd). If you do not live in the Grand Forks-East Grand Forks area you can look up take back locations near you on the Safe Kids website.

Take back events are another great way to dispose of your unused or expired medications. There is a medication take back event coming up at the Grand Forks Senior Center on Thursday June, 23rd from 11am-12pm. Pills, capsules, inhalers, ointments, patches, and liquid medications can all be disposed at a drug take back site or event.

If there is not a drug take back site near you, here is how you can safely dispose of medications at home. Mix medications with a substance such as cat litter or used coffee grounds. Place the mixture into a sealed plastic bag and add water to it. Then dispose of it in the garbage. This makes it so if people were to go through your trash that they wouldn’t be able to take the medications out and use them.

Thank you McKenzie Anderson, UND nursing student for contributing to the Safe Kids Grand Forks Newsletter.
When the lawn begins to green up in the spring it means it's time to mow.
Each year, 9,000 children visit emergency rooms due to lawn mower injuries. A few simple precautions may help you enjoy your time spent outdoors, and help make sure the whole family is safe.

ATV Safety
Ride Safe. Ride Smart.
Every day, more than 100 kids in the United States are injured on ATVs, with some of those injuries occurring right here in North Dakota.

Summer is just around the corner and with warmer weather, we are likely to see ATV’s come out of storage sheds. While these machines used to be used for primarily farming purposes, they have become more popular recreational vehicles in the past decade or so. Safe Kids Grand Forks, along with our partners at the American Academy of Pediatrics remind parents and caregivers that their recommendation is that youth under age 16 should not be riding on full-sized ATV’s. We have more information on the dangers of these vehicles and recommendations for safety in the attached poster. We thank our partners with AgCountry for their support and partnership in this work.
