New California Employment Laws for 2024 |
It’s that time of year again — the trees are changing color, fall décor adorns front porches (and sometimes workspaces), and brand-new
labor and employment laws are heading your way. As it usually does, this year’s legislative session ended with hundreds of bills hitting Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk, many of which will impact employers’ compliance efforts. Here’s a quick look at some of the newly signed laws of which employers should be aware. Unless otherwise stated, they’re effective starting January 1, 2024. See new laws here. Sales is a Contact Sport
A few days ago, I was watching an Ed Mylett interview featuring Ryan Serhant, a highly successful real estate agent in New York City. According to Ryan, a key factor in his success is reaching out to 15 new people daily. This resonated with a conversation I had two months ago with Rick Fingerman, a local financial planner, who shared a similar strategy. He recounted the story of a very successful insurance agent who attributed his success to talking to three new people seven days a week about what he did for a living. He said it didn't matter if they were at the supermarket or he met them at church, the key was to talk to three new people a day. During my three-plus decades in the sales industry, I’ve observed many examples of the importance of what Ryan and Rick emphasized. The idea of salespeople going out and talking to lots of people about what they do remains a timeless and crucial element of sales success; it was effective from the inception of sales, continues to yield results today, and will endure as long as selling exists. Sunny Outlook for 2024 Repair Age Sweet-Spot |
Record-high share of foreign nameplates and light trucks 6 to 10 years old will hit service bays next year to drive aftermarket product growth. The repair-age sweet-spot — cars and light trucks 6 to 10 years old — contains vehicles averaging the highest annual
replacement rates for many automotive products. Many more vehicles will be in the repair-age sweet-spot during 2024 than five years earlier, and it will contain a different mix of nameplates and types of vehicles, according to the latest Lang Aftermarket iReport. These changes will increase 2024 aftermarket product volume, especially internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The following (see here) are highlights from the report. Source: aftermarket MATTERS

How AI and Machine Learning are Reshaping Supply Chain Resiliency and Efficiency | A key advantage of machine learning algorithms and AI in supply chain management is their ability to analyze vast amounts of real-time data. In today’s rapidly evolving global economy, supply chain executives face numerous challenges in maintaining efficient and resilient operations. Among the highest concern is supply chain disruption, with a joint study by Genpact and HFS revealing that 70% have not yet recovered from the pandemic’s impact on their supply chain. However, emerging technologies, particularly machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI), offer unprecedented opportunities to enhance proactive decision-making and optimize supply chain management. By leveraging advanced data analytics and predictive modelling, supply chain executives can navigate disruptions, enhance visibility and drive operational efficiency. Read more here. Finish the Year Strong: 4 Key Areas to Focus for Long-Term Success
Distributors with the ability to recognize weaknesses and areas for improvement now will put their business on a trajectory for a strong finish this year and the right path for another year of continued success. We’ve all made a New Year’s Resolution at some point in our lives. Despite the appeal of starting fresh on January 1, resolutions run the risk of fizzling out if not tended to properly. Relying on a specific date as a trigger for action isn’t necessarily the most “solid” rationale to initiate change. In fact, inertia may be the more likely outcome in these instances. As summer turns to fall, it’s a good time for distribution leaders to revisit their year-end strategy and prioritize their warehouse operations. By taking the time to assess and reprioritize now, they can end the current year on a high note and position themselves for an even stronger year ahead. HERE are four things distributors should focus on to help them improve operations and achieve long-term success. Source: Supply and Demand Chain Executive

Is the EV Boom Turning into a Bust?
With automakers delaying production and losing money on EVs, is the U.S. displaying signs of an EV bust? Tesla launched its Model Y in 2020, and shortly after that, Tesla’s value in the market skyrocketed. As of the first quarter of this year, the Model Y is the top-selling vehicle in the world, surpassing the Toyota Corolla. U.S. consumers’ reaction to the Model Y’s launch in 2020 signaled to the rest of the world and vehicle OEMs that electric vehicles were worth the investment. Following suit a year later, the Detroit Three—Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis—announced a “shared aspiration to achieve sales of 40-50% of annual U.S. volumes of electric vehicles ... by 2030.” And many U.S. startup electric vehicle manufacturers have made a name for themselves in the market since then. European automakers have also introduced electric vehicles into the market rapidly, giving consumers and professionals plenty of green vehicle options. The number of electric vehicles purchased by Americans has set quarterly records since Q3 of 2020. Using data from Kelley Blue Book, Cox Automotive estimates year-to-date U.S. EV sales will surpass one million for the first time this month. See more discussion here. Source: Fleet Owner
