4th Sunday in Ordinary Time - January 31, 2021
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” - Mk 1:23-25

Dear Parishioners,
Next weekend, February 6-7, is the kick-off for We Are Many Hands. One Vision, the 2021 Catholic Stewardship Appeal. We plan to show the video – which, we’re told, will be “very different” from what we’ve seen in the past and includes original music along with a timely and uplifting message. The initial mailing directly from the Archdiocese to registered parishioners is being sent out on Monday.
The Rosary for Life is prayed on the first Saturday
and first Sunday of each month.
The Rosary for Life will be prayed before Masses at 3:30 pm on Saturday, February 6 and at
9:00 am on Sunday, February 7.
Feast of Saint Blaise - February 3.
St. Blaise is a bishop and martyr who lived in the fourth century in Turkey and Armenia. On his feast the church recalls a miracle cure associated with him and celebrates the blessing of the throats. Blaise apparently saved the life of a boy who was choking on a fish bone. The saint said that anyone who lit a candle in his memory would be free of infection, thus candles are used in the traditional throat blessing. He is listed among the Fourteen Holy Helpers, saints revered as healers. He is the patron saint of throat illnesses, animals, wool combers, and wool trading.
Fr. Phil will administer the Blessing of Throats at St. Thomas Aquinas during the 8:00 am Mass on Wednesday, February 3.
Celebrating Catholic Schools Week
January 31 - February 6
This year's Catholic Schools Week logo stresses that the Catholic school, like the Catholic Church, is not a building or an institution, but it is the people. As the people of God, we at St. John the Baptist Parish and School work collaboratively to bring the Kingdom of God to Earth and raise up the next generation to do the same. The image of teachers and students forming the foundation of the school shows that we are active people of faith who serve God and others. May we all strive to live in active service of Jesus and his mission as we nationally come together during Catholic Schools week and always.
Bless each one of you as we continue to work collaboratively to cultivate Disciples of Christ! Thank you to all Parish members and School Families for your continued support of the school.
Happy Catholics Schools Week,
Mrs. Amy Nelson, Principal
Twenty years ago, Saint Pope John Paul II said to an audience of Catholic educators in New Orleans, “Yours is a great gift to the Church, a great gift to your nation.”
Countless people in our country have been blessed by the many gifts of Catholic schools. They have carried what they have learned and witnessed with them; however, many have lost touch with our local Catholic school communities. It is time for these people to reconnect with Catholic schools and give back. It is with this recognition in mind that St. John the Baptist Catholic School is pleased to participate in Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools. Scheduled for February 2 at 11:00 am to February 3 at 11:00 am. This is a time for individuals to give to their local Catholic school. Thank you for your support. To give CLICK HERE.
SJB Small Groups - Lent 2021 - This is for you.
St John the Baptist is launching a Small Group initiative this Lent and going forward. Small groups can create a deeper sense of community within a parish, a deeper connection and relationship with God, and expand the faith beyond parish walls.
Some parishioners are connected to a small group of some kind already and yet many of us are not. Are you connected? Do you feel like you belong? Are you just going through the motions? How are you deepening your faith?
CLICK HERE to find out more about what small group you will join this Lent!
Alpha is a place to explore the Christian faith with others. It’s a series of conversations focused on exploring life, faith, and meaning. Through small groups, participants have the opportunity to connect with others, share perspectives, and experience the love of God. You are most welcome to come join us! And please consider inviting along a friend or family member and journeying together. We'll meet Sundays from 7:30-8:30pm from February 21-May 2, from the comfort of your couch, via Zoom!
There’s no homework, and no cost! Check it out the first Sunday, and if you like it, keep coming back! Learn more HERE & sign up HERE. Questions? Contact Paige Katzfey or (920) 892-4006.
A Very Lewis Lent - Perhaps best known as the author of the classic children’s series The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis was arguably one of the most influential Christian writers of the twentieth century. A convert from atheism, Lewis’s many books continue to inspire Christians today. This Lent, come journey toward Easter with two of C.S. Lewis’s best-loved novels, The Screwtape Letters (1942) and The Great Divorce (1945) – both of which are profound meditations on good and evil. We’ll meet weekly on Thursday mornings at SJB to share in discussion!
Human Concerns
Catholic Social Teaching - 101
Catholic Social Teaching - 101 - Solidarity
(2 of a 7 -part Series)
We are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers and sisters keepers, wherever they may be. Loving our neighbor has global dimensions in a shrinking world. At the core of the virtue of solidarity is the pursuit of justice and peace.
Our love for all our sisters and brothers demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by violence and conflict.
