June 6, 2022 Virtual Roundtable Discussion
10:30 am to 12:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time
In a consensus decision aimed at protecting the world from future pandemics, the World Health Assembly — the decision-making body of the WHO — proposed establishing a pandemic treaty at a special session held from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1, 2021. There are on-going global discussions about what topics such a legal instrument should cover. This Roundtable will highlight the importance of integrating the One Health (OH) approach into pandemic prevention and preparedness as part of a pandemic treaty. Drs. Andrea Winkler, Carlos das Neves, Katinka de Balogh, Suzanne Hindmarch, and Arne Ruckert will reflect on how well OH principles are currently embedded in global governance and what can be done to improve its uptake through the pandemic treaty. https://tinyurl.com/8mn6ad58

24 April 2022 WHO website posting
In 2018, Kazakhstan started exploring the One Health approach to zoonotic diseases with the conduction of the International Health Regulations Performance of Veterinary Services (IHR-PVS)  National Bridging Workshop (NBW). The NBW is a three-day event facilitated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), bringing together public health and animal health participants..... In 2020, WHO started the global initiative to follow up and support the implementation of the NBW Roadmaps by establishing a One Health/NBW Catalyst network in countries that have completed NBWs. Kazakhstan was the first country with a One Health Catalyst position in the WHO country office filled at the beginning of 2021. By the end of 2021, the network included 11 countries with plans to expand to 15 in early 2022. https://tinyurl.com/k7xkzryb

Joint statement by the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) and the EU Health Policy Platform
Planetary health and one health concepts are currently not central to public health education [in Europe]; this is creating an unprepared workforce. Education that improves climate-health literacy helps build consensus and becomes the foundation for the acquisition of the expertise required to contribute to the solution of climate problems, build understanding of the gravity of the twin crises of climate and health, the urgency of the threat, awareness about what can be done and the skills to work with others to take the first steps…..6. Including concepts such as One Health and Planetary Health in the development of public health and healthcare professionals’ education frameworks in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuous professional development, recognising the ongoing contribution of experts and people with lived experience in these areas. https://tinyurl.com/2trbxxmp

“We really have to highlight the concept of one health. It’s not only about human health. We have to consider health in animals and the environment. And if you don’t look after these areas, we are the one that suffer at the end. ........ Right now, such efforts are being conducted mostly piecemeal, often added to non-covid work that is already funded. She and other scientists say a more coordinated global surveillance approach that will target a range of species during different seasons and in different geographic areas is needed to stop a potential new generation of variants." https://wapo.st/3a5WKAJ

“Eight ‘key themes’ are covered, from climate change to equity, but One Health is not treated as a separate agenda item…… Because global health is much more than an industry matter, and One Health is critically multi-sectoral with implications much beyond the human health sector, it should be given its own space on the WEF agenda." https://bit.ly/3PRUNZm

There is an urgent need for governments to invest in local and global initiatives that focus on the human-animal-environment interface of disease. One such investment includes funding higher education programs in One Health. These programs will prepare the next generation of Canadians to address societal grand challenges — like pandemic preparedness — with a One Health lens, enabling the formation of teams whose expertise transcends disciplinary boundaries…… Now, more than ever, we need to ensure that both local and global One Health initiatives are developed as a core component of planning preparedness for future pandemics. https://tinyurl.com/4e2nv8jk

I see a growing critical mass of young professionals who will, quite literally, change the world as they implement One Health …….Many of you have heard me refer to One Health as a ‘Ray of Hope for the Future’.
