For many, the celebration of Christmas is made difficult by feelings of loneliness, grief, alienation, and sadness, whether personal or collective.

Our “Longest Night” service, which will be hosted by our Stephen Ministers via Zoom this Tuesday evening, December 15, recognizes and makes space for these feelings and challenges.

“Light Up a Life” Offering
Throughout Advent we are receiving a “Light Up a Life” offering, which helps shine God’s light of love on those who need it most this season, including those in need of the warmth, clothing, and nourishment provided by our Fourth Church Meals Ministry and Chicago Lights Social Service Center programs.

Gifts can be made to this offering online at www.fourthchurch.org/give-online (type “Light Up a Life” in the comments) or by writing “Light Up a Life” on the memo line of a check made payable to Fourth Presbyterian Church (and mailed to the church at 126 E. Chestnut St., Chicago, IL 60611.2014).
The season of Advent invites us to set aside time for daily personal prayer and reflection, creating space to prepare our hearts and lives to receive the gift that comes to us in the stable and embracing what it means to travel through life guided by the Light that darkness cannot overcome.

Our daily Advent devotions—which are written by Fourth Church members and staff—offer a resource for this meditative journey. To receive them daily by email, sign up online at www.bit.ly/fpcdevotions.

The devotions also will be posted daily on Facebook, on Twitter (@FourthChicago), and on our devotions web page.

Additional resources for observing Advent can also be found online.
As we look toward our celebrations of Christmas with eager anticipation, we hope you will plan to join us online as we celebrate the birth of Emmanuel, God with Us.

Our online Christmas services will be available as our Sunday morning services are, via

For those who do not have Internet access, we also make our services, including the Christmas services, available to listen to via the phone. If you know of someone for whom this audio opportunity would be welcome, please encourage them to call 888.916.9166 (toll-free) at the time of the service. It is also possible to sign up to have that phone platform call you each time a service is available to listen to.

What does it mean to be called by God to a world of “secular” service? What are the unique challenges faced by Spirit-filled people in the workplace? And how can we bring the sacred into the secular without isolating ourselves?

These are just some of the questions Lois Snavely, former seminary intern at Fourth Church, will lead us in exploring this Sunday and next in a new Academy for Faith and Life class.

“Faith in Uncertain Times:
Reflecting on the Past and Envisioning the Future”

Mark your calendar for a Thursday, January 14 Michigan Avenue Forum that will be held online at 7:00 p.m.

That evening Lucy Forster-Smith will moderate a discussion among panelists Shannon Kershner; Horace Smith, Pastor of Apostolic Faith Church; Otis Moss III, Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ; David Crawford, President of McCormick Theological Seminary; and Ozzie Smith Jr., Pastor Emeritus of Covenant United Church of Christ.

As we head into a new year, they will explore together questions such as
  • What is the role of faith and religious institutions in these unsettled times?
  • How can our faith communities work together to rebuild society and become a unifying force in Chicago?
  • What have you learned about faith and humanity from the pandemic?
  • How do we survive, thrive and flourish in these historic times?
  • What is your biggest hope for the future?
