RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Assistant Professor Vaibhav Diwanji is program chair for the South Asian Media and Cultural Studies annual international conference, which is being held virtually Feb. 10-11. The theme of this year’s conference is "Imagining Futures," and the keynote address is “Disinformation: Shaping the Future Landscape in South Asia.”

Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye is one of the panelists in the AEJMC Webinar Series “Not Business as Usual: Mitigating the Impact of the Pandemic on Women and BIPOC Scholars” at noon Feb. 8. Register here.

Ph.D. candidate Harrison Rosenthal and Associate Professor Genelle Belmas’ paper “Was Frankfurter Right? Beauharnais, Group Libel, and the Regulation of Hate Speech” was accepted for presentation to the Law & Policy Division of the 2022 AEJMC Southeast Colloquium, March 17-19, at the University of Memphis. The authors evaluate whether hate speech is tantamount to group libel and whether states should experiment legislatively with enacting statutory prohibitions. 
Finneman to give Budig lecture on Feb. 24
Associate Professor Teri Finneman is the recipient of the 2021-2022 Gretchen and Gene Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing and will present a lecture on the vital role of student writers at noon Feb. 24 in the Clarkson Gallery in Stauffer-Flint Hall. In her lecture, "Reimagining Roles: Student Writers Serving Kansas Communities," Finneman will share the opportunities and challenges of using student writing to help fill information gaps in Kansas small towns. INSIDE THE SCHOOL
Nancy Mays is welcoming guests to her Social Media in Strategic Communications class this semester, and faculty and other students are welcome to join via Zoom. Nicholas Segura, owner of Segura Marketing, a Kansas City-based multicultural marketing and communications firm, is the guest speaker Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. Segura is one of the area's leading experts on multicultural marketing and has helped brands create thoughtful campaigns targeting Hispanic audiences. Some of the brands he's worked with include Sonic, Hallmark, Applebee's, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and more. 

The Eudora Times will celebrate its third birthday later this month; it published its first story Feb. 21, 2019. Founder and Associate Professor Teri Finneman co-hosted a webinar last week to discuss the opportunities and challenges of more universities starting news desert publications to help solve the crisis of declines in local news.

Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, served as the official pronouncer for the Douglas County Spelling Bee, the district round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Steve Rottinghaus, career and outreach coordinator, was the public address announcer for four games of the Wellsville Top Gun girls basketball tournament the last week of January.

Get free food and compete for prizes at Wall Street Wednesdays
The University Daily Kansan is partnering with The Wall Street Journal, the School of Business and Flip'd for Wall Street Wednesdays, a series of events designed to enhance student engagement with The Wall Street Journal. Each event begins at 12:20 p.m. with a quiz on the main ideas encapsulated in articles and stories reported in The Wall Street Journal the previous week. This is followed by a short discussion led by a faculty expert on a recent story from the newspaper. The event concludes by 12:50 p.m. with prizes for the top three scorers on the quiz and a light snack. The first event is this Wednesday, Feb. 9. Learn more and register here.

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters is accepting entries for its 2022 student broadcast awards. The deadline to enter is midnight on Feb. 15. The awards will be presented during the student seminar at the University of Kansas on April 7. Find contest categories and instructions here. 

The NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists’ second annual student conference is Feb. 25-26. More than 100 LGBTQ students will come together for networking sessions, informational breakouts and an internship and career fair with top recruiters. Registration is free for NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists student members. Students who are not members and wish to participate may register for $25. Learn more here.

National Public Radio’s College Podcast Challenge is open for submissions. Students from around the country are invited to submit a podcast for a chance to have it featured on NPR and win a $5,000 scholarship. The deadline is Feb. 28. Apply now.

The KC Ad Club’s 2022-23 Foundation Scholarship is now open. The scholarship has been awarded for over 30 years and helps students set themselves apart from their peers and get involved in the thriving Kansas City advertising community. Deadline is March 4. Learn more and apply.

The Inez Y. Kaiser Greater Kansas City-Public Relations Society of America Memorial Student Scholarships portal is open for 2022 applications. The deadline is March 11. The scholarships are in recognition of Inez Kaiser’s national legacy as the first Black woman to join PRSA in 1966 and the 75th anniversary of PRSA. Black junior or first-semester seniors enrolled in a public relations or communications program at an accredited college or university are eligible to apply. The Sinclair Broadcast Diversity Scholarship is designed for qualifying and deserving students from underrepresented minority groups interested in a career in broadcast, digital journalism or marketing. The deadline is April 30. Get more information and apply here.
KU PRSSA's first meeting of the spring semester is Feb. 10
Students are invited to join the next Public Relations Student Society of America virtual meeting Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. on Zoom. (Passcode is 204684.) The guest speaker Katie Friend, j'19, who is a talent acquisition specialist for Spotlight Analyst Relations. PRSSA bridges the gap between students and professional careers. CAREER & OUTREACH CENTER
The Career and Internship Expo, hosted by the University Career Center, is set for Wednesday, Feb. 9. The in-person fair is 1-4 p.m. at the Kansas Union, and the virtual fair is 3-6 p.m. on Career Fair Plus. More than 130 employers will be recruiting students for part-time jobs, internships and full-time positions. Schedule a virtual appointment with a recruiter here. Direct Action and Research Training Center will hold an information session at 5 p.m. Feb. 16 to discuss careers in community organizing. All KU students and recent graduates are welcome, particularly students graduating before August 2022. RSVP here.

The Ballard Center, 708 Elm St., is accepting applications for its volunteer public relations program. Participants will work with the director of outreach and communications on various projects, including social media, quarterly newsletters and the annual report. The program, which allows students to work at the center and remotely, begins in February and continues through early May. Apply here.
Next J-School Career Fair is March 3
The Spring Journalism and Mass Communications Career Fair is Thursday, March 3, at Stauffer-Flint Hall. The in-person event, open to all majors and classes, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A professional photographer will be in Room 113 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to take portraits for students’ LinkedIn profiles. Business professional or business casual is the recommended attire for the fair, where organizations will be sharing more details on internship and job opportunities.
