February 2021

A Message From Michelle

Greetings on a cold, snowy February morning...

February is just one of those special months that we all either love or despise. A month dedicated by ‘Hallmark’ to recognize and honor those we love with a card (Ha, Hallmark HOPES!), flowers, chocolates, or a candlelit dinner. It’s also historically one of the coldest of the 12 and certainly, 2021 is proving this true. A ‘tiny’ Month also recognizing the rich contributions of African Americans; the awareness of Heart Health and every 4 years, it’s the chosen month that receives an extra day!

But at Pickering Manor, we are celebrating for a different reason! We are honored to have been recognized as a local facility who managed the pandemic with no Covid cases among our residents thus far and few among our staff. In only a few short weeks, we will move past the difficult Anniversary of a time that will never be forgotten by this generation.

We are also proud and humbled to have been fortunate to receive the Covid vaccines for our residents and our staff with nearly 100% of our residents receiving the vaccine and approximately 70-75% of our staff. This vaccine and the increased ability to test will be the components nearing us to normalcy.

While we are all anxiously awaiting directives from the CDC and the Department of Health, they have yet to commit to how the vaccines will impact the transition to ‘normal’. We are hoping that it will coincide with the ability to open our visitation and allow our residents and families to see one another with fewer restrictions. I am cautiously optimistic since it’s also evident that we now have other ‘variants’ that are causing concern and we must continue the efforts of getting ‘more shots in more arms’!

I would also encourage all of you who may be hesitant about receiving the vaccine...please consider the bigger picture. While you may or may not have a 24-hour period of discomfort, the benefit in this case far outweighs the risk. I’m asking that you lay down your fear and consider how you can be a part of the change that is necessary to return us to one another.

And last, but certainly not least, I am pleased to say that following a 3-day annual Department of Health Licensure Inspection, the result was only one minor deficiency regarding a refrigerator temperature. Again, so proud of our Staff!

And lastly, we are continuing the Renovation portion of our Project and hope for completion by mid-summer. We are welcoming new Rehab residents who are only with us for a brief transitional time between hospital and home; and we also have a small number of brand new Personal Care rooms available!

So, stay warm; stay healthy, and ‘arm-in-arm’ (get it??)....we’ll get through this together!!
