During the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), the Pacific Institute issued an urgent call for water resilience to be elevated on the global climate agenda. “Climate change is water change, and we are seeing the greatest impacts of climate change felt through water resources,” says Cora Kammeyer of the Pacific Institute. “Despite knowing that, we really haven’t seen water showing up in the climate dialogues in the past. It’s been conspicuously absent, and that’s been a huge miss. But that is starting to change…”

Update from the CEO Water Mandate: Raising Our Ambition to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Resilience
The Pacific Institute is Co-Secretariat of the CEO Water Mandate, a UN Global Compact initiative that mobilizes business leaders to take action on water, sanitation, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The CEO Water Mandate's WASH4Work initiative has released its 2021 insights paper to support businesses of all sectors and sizes in the vital work of integrating climate-resilient water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) into corporate water stewardship. Presenting learnings from across the WASH4Work membership on the evolution of WASH action, the report supports raising the global ambition to resilient WASH actions that will withstand the shocks of climate change and health risks such as COVID-19.

Natured-Based Solutions (NBS) can deliver sustainable improvements in watershed health, write Dr. Gregg Brill of the Pacific Institute and Kari Vigerstol of The Nature Conservancy. Benefits include carbon sequestration, water and climate resilience, and biodiversity support -- along with economic, social, and cultural benefits for communities. However, a key challenge in implementing NBS has been a lack of a standardized approach to identify and account for the benefits accrued from investment. This article in The waterSpot explores the NBS Benefits Explorer, a tool recently developed by the Pacific Institute, Danone, LimnoTech, and The Nature Conservancy to address challenges to implementing NBS.

In this blog post, Cora Kammeyer, Dr. Sonali Abraham, and Heather Cooley underscore the critical importance of strong, forward-looking water use standards in California and beyond. "We will face more severe droughts and hotter temperatures in the years to come, putting greater pressure on water resources," they write. "Robust water efficiency standards will help ensure that the state’s drinking water supplies are available for essential uses, and not wasted. This is true not just for California, but also for the Western U.S. and many other arid regions around the world."

Save the Date: Salton Sea Community Science Webinar

California's Salton Sea faces a host of challenges, including a declining water supply, rising salinity, very high levels of nutrients that generate excessive algal growth, and very low oxygen levels. Join the Pacific Institute next month for this webinar on community science at the Salton Sea. Local community members will describe the importance and uses of community science and several recent and ongoing community science efforts. These efforts include air and water quality monitoring, invertebrate sampling, shoreline mapping, and ways to share and leverage this data into action.
