Your Child About the Dangers of Vaping
|

Dear Parents of City School District of New Rochelle Secondary School Students,
City School District of New Rochelle schools, like schools around the country, recently experienced an incident involving student vaping on school grounds. We take this issue very seriously due to the health risks and long-term effects vaping can have on our students.
This letter is to inform parents and guardians of the issue and provide resources to help you address concerns if you feel that your child is involved in this type of behavior, and to help you identify vapes and e-cigarettes, which are constantly evolving to look like everyday items.
Vaping is the act of inhaling a vapor produced by an electronic vaporizer or e-cigarette. The vapor can contain nicotine and other toxic unidentifiable substances such as formaldehyde. The liquids that are vaporized come in many different flavors and might even smell fruity. For example, many of the flavors of these liquid concentrates, or ‘vape juices,’ are sweet and have names such as cinnamon, marshmallow, grape, strawberry, bubblegum, or cookies, which may lead children to falsely believe that they are less dangerous. Vaporizers/e-cigarettes come in all different shapes and are targeted to minors and young adults in advertising. Some common styles look like a thick pen, an iPad stylus, a flash drive, or thick markers/highlighters. The devices are very small and can easily be hidden on a person and may blend in with normal backpack items. Some are odorless and produce minimal smoke, making them difficult to detect.
According to the Surgeon General, E-cigarette use among youth has skyrocketed in the past year at a rate of epidemic proportions. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration's National Youth Tobacco Survey indicate the percentage of high school-age children reporting e-cigarettes use had risen by more than 75 percent between 2017 and 2018. Use among middle school-age children also increased nearly 50 percent.
Like cigarettes, stores cannot legally sell vaping materials to children under the age of 18. However, students report that they purchase the devices from local corner stores. The school district has notified the New Rochelle Police Department about the shops students reported, and NRPD is investigating the sale of vapes to minors.
Vaping and the use and possession of vapes and e-cigarettes are strictly prohibited on school grounds by the New Rochelle School District Code of Conduct, a copy of which has been given to all students and parents/guardians. We hope you find this letter informative and understand our concerns about this potentially harmful issue. Our goal is to partner with parents and guardians to help support our students in making positive decisions for themselves and their future. Vapear es el acto de inhalar un vapor producido por un vaporizador electrónico o un cigarrillo electrónico. El vapor puede contener nicotina y otras sustancias tóxicas no identificables como el formaldehído. Los líquidos que se vaporizan vienen en muchos sabores diferentes e incluso pueden tener un olor afrutado. Por ejemplo, muchos de los sabores de estos concentrados líquidos, o 'jugos de vape', son dulces y tienen nombres como canela, malvavisco, uva, fresa, chicle o galletas, lo que puede llevar a los niños a creer falsamente que son menos peligrosos. Los vaporizadores/cigarrillos electrónicos vienen en diferentes formas y están dirigidos a menores y adultos jóvenes en la publicidad. Algunos estilos comunes parecen un bolígrafo grueso, un lápiz óptico para iPad, una unidad flash o marcadores/resaltadores gruesos. Los dispositivos son muy pequeños y pueden ocultarse fácilmente en una persona y pueden mezclarse con los artículos normales de la mochila. Algunos son inodoros y producen un mínimo de humo, lo que los hace difíciles de detectar.
Según el Cirujano General, el uso de cigarrillos electrónicos entre los jóvenes se disparó en el último año a un ritmo de proporciones epidémicas.
