November 2023

Being Thankful

I cannot believe it is already November! Time flies and this time of year is probably the quickest.

November and December seem to be a bit fast and furious between work and social obligations, visits with family and friends, out-of-town guests, and all of the related festivities. I want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of self-care. While this time of year is filled with joy and connection, it can also be overwhelming with social obligations and commitments. It's crucial to remember that it's okay to say no if you need a break. Your mental and emotional well-being should always be a priority, and taking time for self-care is not only acceptable but essential. Do you have a way to help deal with some of the stressors related to the holidays? Year after year, one of my favorite escapes continues to be Hallmark movies. Getting lost in a romance, that usually involves an inn or a bakery, snow at just the right time, and always a happy ending, gives me time to pause and relax. We hope you all will take a moment to think about the things that bring you comfort, joy, and a smile, and make sure you carve out time for that activity, I guarantee it will keep you moving forward during the crazy days! Whether you take a walk, listen to music, soak in a tub, or watch a movie, do what you can to take good care so that you are able to maintain the best version of yourself for the whole season.

Read on for some great Thanksgiving resources for families in need. We hope to see many of you at the Wobble Before You Gobble Race on Thanksgiving morning, and we wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving filled with making great memories.

Thank you for your continued support.

Ways to Give: GivingTuesday!

November 28th is GivingTuesday!

This year we are asking for donations to support our Client Emergency Needs Fund, which is a special fund we use when families experience extraordinary challenges and turn to us for assistance. Donations to this fund will ensure we do not have to turn a family away and 100% of your donation will help local families in need with rental assistance, utilities, gas, and unforeseen bills that can bring a family to their financial limit. Any amount makes a difference.

This fund has helped many families in our community including Todd's. With his newborn in the NICU for many weeks, Todd's family was left to choose between paying medical bills and paying rent. Through the Client Emergency Needs Fund, we provided Todd's family with rental assistance so they could focus on getting their new little one healthy and home.

Plan to donate on November 28th, or any day, to help more families like Todd's.

What is GivingTuesday?

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. Created in 2012, it has a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

High Road to the Middle Class

We are thrilled to announce that the Department of Labor (DOL) has recognized The Children's Cabinet's High-Road Training Program (HRTP), Washoe YouthBuild, as a proven success model for workforce development which is listed on the newly launched DOL High-Road to the Middle-Class Map.

By leveraging partnerships with both employers and labor or worker organizations, HRTPs deliver worker-centered and industry-driven training that is in sync with employer needs and regional labor market demands for a skilled workforce.

About Washoe YouthBuild

Washoe YouthBuild will serve 65 youth ages 16-24 who are not enrolled in school and low-income, involved with the criminal justice system, aging out of foster care, pregnant or parenting. The program aims to assist disconnected youth with attaining their High School diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE), expose youth to construction careers and train them to be work ready, create transitional housing for families experiencing homelessness, create a pipeline for youth local apprenticeship programs, solidify leadership skills, and connect youth to college and in-demand community jobs
